8/10 Good
"Lovely location overlooking Lake Malawi. The staff were so friendly. Breakfast in the morning could have included local fresh fruit like water melon, paw paw, guava, pineapple. Very cheap to buy at the local market. The kitchen was away from the dining area so the cooked breakfast especially, would have been hotter if the plates had covers over them when carried down to the dining area. One big improvement they could make is to supply mugs, a kettle, tea and coffee in the rooms. Another recommendation is to have plastic cushions on the wooden chairs down in the dining area. Being plastic they could then be wiped down when necessary. We spent five days there and we would definitely stay there again."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Chembe?
The best area to stay in Chembe is along the main lakeside strip, particularly around the Chembe Village area.

This strip stretches along the eastern shore of Lake Malawi, offering direct access to the water. It's characterised by a series of lodges and guesthouses interspersed with local businesses and homes, giving it a relaxed, local feel. The main area is quite linear, making it easy to navigate by foot or bike.

For couples seeking a tranquil getaway, the lodges just north or south of the main Chembe Village are ideal. These establishments often feature private beaches, stunning lake views, and amenities like high-end fitness equipment or spa services, great for unwinding. You're close enough to the village for local experiences but benefit from a more secluded setting.

Solo travellers looking to connect with others and participate in activities will find the guesthouses and lodges closer to the centre of Chembe Village more suitable.
When is the best time to go to Chembe?
The best time to visit Chembe, Southern Region, Malawi, is during the dry season, which runs from May to October.

During these months, you'll experience pleasant weather with less humidity and virtually no rain, making it ideal for enjoying the lake and outdoor activities. The daytime temperatures are comfortable, typically ranging from 20°C to 28°C, and the evenings are cooler. This period is superb for travellers who want to make the most of the sun and water sports.

For those interested in wildlife viewing, particularly birdwatching, the dry season is also excellent as the vegetation is less dense, and animals tend to congregate around water sources. It's a great time for couples or solo travellers looking for a relaxed yet active holiday.
