Chassell House #1 at Portage Lake

Great for all seasons and super convenient for enjoying local activities - Newly remodeled and decorated to be a welcoming retreat for travelers to Chassell or nearby Houghton and Michigan Tech. The Chassell Township Park, trails, the annual strawberry festival are all just a few steps from the front porch.

This house is perfect for boating/fishing and snowmobiling vacations.
Located on Hwy 41, this house has parking for trailers and is easy to find. It is located across from the Chassell Centennial Park at Pike Bay, a sheltered cove off the South end of Portage Lake. The park has a boat launch and fishing pier.

There is off street parking for two vehicles. In summer, parking is at the back door entrance. In winter, parking is on the side lawn and a plow service clears the snow from the parking area.

The fully equipped kitchen has what you need to prepare meals and dine-in. There are a few notable extras— filtered water, ice maker, coffee pot; full-sized washer and dryer, hot water kettle, microwave, and toaster are included. The dining table seats four but there are dishes and silverware enough more.

The house has a hot water boiler and radiators for heat to keep you warm and cozy in the winter. That means you get plenty of hot water for showers. The bathrooms have showers - no bathtubs.

The house has WiFi internet and Alexa is there too to keep you connected.

The house has 2 bedrooms on the main floor and one bedroom upstairs. One room on the main floor has a queen sized bed, the other has a full sized bed with twin sized bunk on top. Both rooms have ceiling fans with remote controls. The upstairs bedroom has 2 twin sized beds and window AC for the summer months. All of the beds are made up with cozy cotton flannel sheets and cotton comforters. The bedding contains no wool or feathers. The pillows are polyester-filled.

Thank you for considering this property and hope you give us the opportunity to welcome you as our guest.

Chassell - front house
Very clean, description of the property is accurate. Owner was very accessible and responded quickly to questions. Property is across the street from the Centennial Park with boat launch, small beach, picnic area, farmers market, etc. - bait shop and small general store a couple of doors down which was convenient. Only odd thing (not anything negative about the property or owners) was the chickens a couple of doors down that were loud...didn't bother us, just wasn't expecting it. One comment about the property is to be very careful on the stairs to the upper level, they are very narrow. It's an older house so again, nothing bad just an FYI. Overall good experience. :)

Great location -easy drive to Houghton/MTU. House was clean, cute & cozy. Owner was easy to communicate with; check-in/out was easy with well defined instructions. Only small disappointments-if you’re a big coffee drinker, bring your own coffee maker; and TV only set up for Netflix, no access to standard network channels so couldn’t watch something like Superbowl. Would stay again.

Comfortable home
The house was very clean and comfortable. We all slept well. All the beds are very comfortable. There are lots of soft, warm blankets nicely wrapped up and easy to grab. It is right on a street that sees some traffic but we knew that ahead of time from previous reviews. It didn't disrupt sleep and wasn't obtrusive.

Family vacation
This was a great location for us visiting family in the UP. The accommodations were great for everyone to have their own space. The kids loved the bunk beds! Loved the big shower and extra soft blankets. The mattresses were comfy and so were the reclining chairs in the living room area. The kitchen had everything we needed for making meals while we were there. It was a great location for the places we wanted to visit. Instructions on everything within the house were helpful and great so we didn't have any questions. Teresa was great to work with, timely and helpful. Our family was coming in from three different places and it worked well to stay at her place and arrange accommodations.

Clean and comfy
Comfy beds, clean everything, updated showers (2), and good kitchen. The coffee maker makes 1 cup at a time, which worked fine for us. There is 1 AC window unit upstairs, but after a 90 degree day, we opened the windows and things were comfortable fir sleeping by 10. The place stayed cool next day with windows and curtains shut - 83 degrees outside but nice in. Cute little convenience store on the block for basics. Right on the main drag.

Great location for boating.
We really enjoyed our stay in Chassell. We vacation every summer in Marquette, but wanted to spend more than a day trip to the Copper Country. The Chassell house gave us the opportunity to enjoy two full day of exploring Portage and Torch lakes and the channels in opposite directions to Lake Superior. There is a bike path to Houghton along Portage lake (a block away from the house) which was also fun. The house is clean and cute! Very nice neighbors, who were helpful with boating advice and added to the local UP flavor. We are pleasure boaters, there were much more fishing boats going out. We highly recommend this property.

Cute cottage
We had a lovely stay here. Would stay again. Cottage was nice. Bed was super comfortable, and the shower was lovely. Host was nice and responsive. Our dog allowed. Surrounding area of UP / Keweenaw Peninsula is really special. Our only small constructive criticisms were that living room could use a couch, kitchen could use a few more cooking tools, the bathroom needs better/full window treatments for privacy, and while the location made it easy enough to get to places (10 minute drive to Houghton and very short walk over to the lake), we thought the cottage would be a lake view when we booked it and that there would be more cute little places to eat/hang right there. Probably our bad for not looking at map and info 100% thoroughly... lake and park very close, just a quick walk across the street and down a block. But, the porch looks out onto a busy Rte 41. Just a small coffee/snack shop with off hours, a little general store, VFW, Dollar General and a gas station there. Thanks for the good stay!

Keeweenaw, we missed you.
It’s been several years since we’ve been to the Keeweenaw. This was the first trip for our kids. The house is simple to find, incredibly accessible and in a walkable neighborhood. The neighbors were extremely friendly and there is a park and store in walking distance. The house has a great setup for a family or a couple friends. Dishes, and other amenities are included. The owner is very easy to communicate with. There are very clear directions provided throughout the house to assist in your stay. We were very happy with our stay and would love to come back.

Chassell Home
The property had been remodeled and updated and quite nicely so. As it is on the main street of Chassell, which is a busy street and a bit noisy all day long. A dishwasher would have been nice for sanitization and convenience. The stairs leading upstairs are dangerous even though they are well lit. Anyone planning on using that area should be aware of that. It would have been nice to meet the homeowner also. However, the entire clan had an amazing visit to the Copper Country which was the home of their parents and grandparents.
