"My only 4-star factor referred to the staff. The woman who checked me in was very pleasant and helpful. The only shock was when she told me to drop my key in the box outside in the morning, because nobody would be at the desk. Not "if" or "just in case." It is their policy to have nobody man the desk in the morning. Or maybe they are short of staff and couldn't have someone that day. But she sounded as if that's the normal case. The room was clean and well-lit, to the point that I thought they were accommodating students who needed to do homework. The bathroom was clean and well appointed. The bed was comfortably firm. I was able to park right outside the door, a feature I look for in a motel, though I did have to walk around a low (waist-high) concrete wall to get from my car to the room and back. I think it's a flood wall, with removable panels that let us walk through, but can be installed to protect the building in an emergency. This was maybe the closest motel to home that I've stayed in I was just too tired to finish the drive. But yes, if I need to find a room in the Centralia area again, I'll try the Varsity Inn first."

"We stayed here for a weekend softball tournament with my teen daughter and were really happy with it. It’s a local family owned place and it has that cozy, small hotel feel. The room was clean, felt safe, and was more updated than the website made it look. We slept great, the beds were comfy and it was quiet. I also liked that it’s set back off the main road by the little lake, so you don’t get the random foot traffic that some of the other hotels in the area get mentioned for in reviews. For what we paid it was exactly what I’d expect, and I have zero complaints. We’ll definitely stay again next time we’re in the area."

"This hotel was exactly what I hoped it would be! Historic with communal baths down the hallway and a room with a soft comfortable bed. It was like going back in time. And to have food and beverage right below, what a bonus! I will definitely stay here again. I enjoyed it that much."

"A little off the beaten path, but well worth the adventure to find it. Clean, modern, probably the best hotel we stayed in in our weeks travel. The $50 incidental charge is so annoying but seems to be common practice nowadays. We don’t smoke we don’t drink never tore up a room, but I’m sure some people do."
