We had a very good time during our first trip to Columbia, but I will warn black American female visitors that they need to be aware of the insidious colorism we experienced at this hotel. We were repeatedly asked to pay cash for our poolside drinks and food; we were often ignored by the poolside wait staff while they bent over backward to accommodate non-black guests. As the only black women at the hotel the entire time, it was disappointing -- and at times infuriating-- to be treated so rudely. To make matters worse, it seemed that the Latinas who worked at the hotel bar/restaurant were the most suspicious of us and thus the rudest. Although I had a Gold Amex on file, they pretended that I did not have guest purchasing privileges and could not charge food and beverages to my room. There were only two of us (both middle-aged, female professionals) and I was shocked by the utter lack of cultural competency displayed by the staff. I would caution any other black women who select this property to have a meeting with the manager about your expectations. Hotel Dann is one of the few tourist hotels with beachfront access which is why we chose this particular property. We were there the week before the stay at home orders in the United States, so we were a bit nervous about our health safety during the pandemic. The hotel is very clean. The beds were nice and the air conditioning was consistent. Our bathroom was well-stocked and adequate for our 5-day visit.
