This is an old fashioned bed & breakfast. The location is superb, five minutes walk from Harvard University square and ten from the Harvard Red Line Subway station. The double room was a bit small but comfortable. The bathroom was ok, with plenty of hot water, but again a bit small. Breakfast in the basement dining room was really good, with plenty of hot and cold choices. There was also a fridge, microwave and kettle available down there for guest use. Service at the desk was friendly and helpful, and there was a handy little lounge opposite reception. We would definitely stay there again.

Thank you for your thoughtful review. You are correct some of our rooms are a bit smaller. The layout of rooms was decided long before we added more private bathrooms. That being said it sounds like perhaps the charm of the building, breakfast, neighborhood and proximity made up for it in some way. We look forward to your next visit and be sure to see if one of our larger rooms is available! We have many room types...

A hidden gem
The experience was simply amazing. The house has been transformed into a beautiful B&B. It was charming, clean, and cozy with a mid 1800's feel. The shower was good eith ample hot water, the bed was comfortable although not a premiere experience like large chain hotels that have upgraded bedding and pillows. We called at 11am to see if our room was ready from Harvard Yard and by the time we walked the short distance, only had to wait about 5 minutes to get into our room. They sent the cleaning crew straight over to do our room first. The breakfast was amazing with cheesy egg phyllo puffs, quiches, yogurt, nuts and raisins, various good quality breads with cheese, peanut butter and nutella. They even had olives and tomatoes. Cereal three kinds of milk or substitutes, and fresh fruit.

Bus stops are across the street, very walkable distance to harvard and red line. My room was clean and cozy. Though one of the people at the service desk is kind of passive aggressive the 2 times i asked her a question nicely, maybe she’s just having a bad day lol

Very comfortable space. Parking in back is limited, but worked out this time. Possible to ask for 1st or 2nd floor, with 3&4 a hike to get up to. Coffee always available.

A hostel not a B& B
The furniture had tears in the upholstery, the sheets were dingy, tub stained . This was more like a youth hostel than B & B.

It's an old charming house, very cozy and has everything you need, staff is incredibly nice, very very clean, there is people cleaning all day, those ladies work hard! kuddos to them. Breakfast was yummy and there's access to coffee, tea and cookies 24/7, Would stay there again, beautiful neighborhood and super easy access to Harvard

I can agree there's not much to say about a "small room shared bath" but I am gonna guess that the "8" means you enjoyed the ....location? breakfast? lending library? porches? cleanliness? or perhaps just the simplicity....As long as you know we are here, and that we have many other room types I'll take it has a good sign that you took the time to share your experience. I hope you saw that it is possible to open our windows, a plus to staying in a house instead of a hotel! If you choose to return please also know we have fans and blankets to adjust your personal comfort, just ask at the front desk!

Location is the best feature of this inn. Individual experience probably depends on specific rooms: our tiny room with a full bed that cost over $300 felt seriously overpriced for the quality of offered accommodations. The mattress was sagging and the shower very weak. The room is so small that there is no place to put luggage. I have no idea where people put their coats and boots in the winter. The door lets in the light from the hallway, which is a problem for those who need a dark room to fall asleep. The breakfast is pretty basic, considering the price of the room...

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay. I am sorry that you were not favorably impressed with Irving House. Yes our rooms are small, and it is possible you were assigned a room with a mattress we are scheduled to replace in the coming months. We have put 'door snakes' to hang on the doors so that light and sound from the hallway are blocked/muffled. We will check to see if there are rooms missing them, as I know these are helpful to everyone to get a good night's sleep. We hope you otherwise enjoyed your stay in Cambridge.
