Travel Guide
Andong
This fascinating provincial city has folk museums, temples, cultural treasures and a culinary scene that all celebrate centuries of Korean traditions.

Andong is the Capital of the Korean Spirit, a place where the legacies of ancient dynasties remain prominent in daily life. The capital of the North Gyeongsang Province commands a scenic position on the banks of the Nakdong River and in the shadow of the Taebaek Mountains. Visit its UNESCO-protected villages, mystical temples, museums and food markets. Stay overnight in a hanok, the traditional residences that date back to the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897).

Start your city tour at Andong Folk Museum, which educates on Korean ceremonies and Confucian culture. Outside is a series of buildings representative of the city’s lifestyles. Enjoy superb river views while crossing the Weolyeonggyo Bridge, Korea’s longest wooden footbridge that is spectacularly illuminated at night. Sample soju liquor and learn about national food and drink at the Andong Soju Museum.

Plan a day to explore the Hahoe Folk Museum, a living riverside village and UNESCO-listed site that has been home to the same clan since the 16th century. Delve into the history of masked dances at the Hahoe Mask Museum. Cross the river to admire the views from Buyongdae Cliff and book in at the Ogyeonjeongsa House hanok guesthouse. Visit the Confucian school called Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy.

Centuries-old temples sit in solitude on the slopes of the Taebaek Mountains. At Bongjeongsa Temple Joseon and Goryeo-era architectural styles blend harmoniously. Admire the Buddha stone carving at Yeonmisa Temple.

In the city center, the food, fresh produce, clothing and jewelry vendors at local markets show a more lively side of the city. Be sure to sample gangodeungeo (salted mackerel) and jjimdak (braised or steamed chicken). With religious shrines, such as the Seven-Story Brick Pagoda in Sinse-Dong, lining the streets and manhole covers decorated with Hahoe masks, the city never loses sight of its roots.

Andong is about a 3-hour journey by train or bus from Seoul. Trains also travel from Busan, Daegu and Gwangju. A sign at the train station translates to Peaceful East and you’ll feel the peaceful ambience of Andong the moment you arrive.

"The guest house is a beautiful 19th century hanok. It's conveniently close to the center and highway yet somehow remains excluded and makes you feel like you're miles away from the traffic and noise of the city. The rooms were spacious and the sleeping mats and pillows very comfortable. The check-in ..."
