"The hotel stay was pleasant. Very clean, convenient free parking right at the hotel, breakfast was plenty. Optional dinner on most days. You can start your hikes right at the hotel. I liked the guest kitchen with microwave, coffeemaker and filled refrigerator. The hotel takes the risk counting on honest guests. I really felt good about it. I like to give a shoutout for Renate who was very helpful and professional and friendly all through my stay. Only downturn for me was that I booked the...

Top Altersbach Hotel Reviews

B&B HOTEL Gotha-Hbf

B&B HOTEL Gotha-Hbf

8/10 Good
"The best thing about this hotel is that it is located just five minutes' walk from Gotha Hauptbahnhof. The amenities are minimal -- in the room there were no coffee/tea making facilities, no tissues, no chair to sit in (just stools), thin towels, one pillow. The breakfast is adequate. There is no food offered later in the day, and there are no restaurants nearby (they are all in the city center). That said, the building is clean and modern, and the staff were friendly. A perfect place to stay if you need to be near the station."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Altersbach?
The best area to stay in Altersbach is within the village centre itself, particularly around Hauptstraße, for convenient access to local amenities and the starting points for many walks.

The village centre is the heart of Altersbach, a small and pleasant community located in the Thuringian Forest. Hauptstraße, the main street, runs through the middle, featuring the village's few shops, traditional guesthouses, and eateries. You'll find the local church and the tourist information office here, which can provide maps and details for hiking trails. The general layout is quite spread out, with houses and guesthouses often surrounded by gardens.

For couples looking for a relaxing getaway, staying in a guesthouse in the village centre offers a pleasant base. You'll be able to enjoy quiet evenings, traditional Thuringian food at local restaurants, and easy access to gentle walks directly from your doorstep.

Families will also find the village centre suitable, especially if they appreciate a tranquil environment and outdoor activities. Many guesthouses offer larger rooms or apartments, and the surrounding fields and forests provide plenty of space for children to explore.
When is the best time to go to Altersbach?
The best times to visit Altersbach are during late spring (May to early June) and early autumn (September to early October) when the weather is pleasant and the natural beauty of the Thuringian Forest is at its peak.

Late spring brings blossoming flora and comfortable temperatures, superb for outdoor activities like hiking and cycling. The days are long, allowing for extended exploration of the surrounding forests and trails. This period is ideal for active couples or solo travellers who enjoy nature and outdoor pursuits without the heat of summer.

Early autumn offers equally agreeable weather, with the added spectacle of changing leaf colours across the forest. The air is crisp, and the hiking trails are generally less crowded than in mid-summer. This season is particularly appealing for those seeking a more tranquil experience and stunning photographic opportunities.
