So pleased to know you enjoyed your stay, David. It was a very simple home when it was built by my grandfather in 1902--and we've been so fortunate to keep it up over the decades since--keeping it in line with modern living standards and the technology available in our region, but without losing its original character. We look forward to welcoming you back!

Lovely weekend getaway
Everything about our stay at this cozy mountain cottage was wonderful except we wish we could have stayed longer! Guy was a wonderful host from arrival and even after departure. We thoroughly appreciated the location and the quiet atmosphere. We were able to get to/from the Penn State football game on Saturday, no problem, and enjoyed a couple of the restaurant recommendations Guy provided in addition to some leisurely drives and walks. Thank you, and we definitely look forward to coming again!

Great cottage and location!
This place is off of a Rothrock State Forest road but we only saw 3 cars go by the entire 3 days we were there. The historic cottage was very comfortable and clean. My brother and I took our dad here to fish for Father's Day weekend. He loved it. The Little Juniata River is about a 100 yards down the State Forest Rd so we walked down there frequently to fish and seine. I would get my morning run in by running the other direction into the State Forest. Beautiful area to run. The owner was very friendly and great to work with. There is a lock box on the porch to access the key. No wifi or cable but that was no problem for us. The cell signal is weak but we were able to make calls and send text messages. I liked that we didn't have external distractions. My brother and dad liked it so much they suggested that we stay there every year for Father's Day. We are already planning a trip back soon.

Thanks much, Barry, for reviewing your stay with us. So pleased to know we met your expectations. Our cottage is ideal for guests who either value disconnecting from TV and Internet or are not inconvenienced by the absence thereof. We are truly an experience in "stepping back in time!" (I was a young adult when the first moon landing took place in 1969, and I *listened* to it on the *radio*, sitting in that living room. Our telephone back then was on a 4-party line. Who ever heard of cellphones!) That said, where we can make improvements, we certainly do: For added safety, we are now actively exploring the installation of an outdoor universal cell signal amplifier, which neighbors tell us works very well for them at their cottage near us. Our security system is totally on cellular and has always been fully reliable. Thanks for your important feedback. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

So pleased that you enjoyed your time at our family cottage. Ours is a legacy home, now in the third and fourth generation. We love sharing it and welcoming guests who enjoy the outdoors and don't mind disconnecting from technology over a long weekend. The income it generates allows us to both maintain and enhance it. The all-season porch was our most recent investment. In 2021 we upgraded it with thermal windows from the simple screened porch it began as in the 1940s to the heated space you enjoyed this past weekend. Our family and guests love it in the winter--especially on a snowy day, but equally on warm nights in the summer when we can open the sliding windows and listen to nature. We look forward to your return!

Great stay highly recommend
The cabin was great. Very clean and kept up. Easy to find and not too far off the beaten path. Guy (owner) was great. Met me when I got there and showed some key points of the cabin and things to look out for. Was very responsive to needs. Only need to contact during the stay for a repair of an old a/c hose that was not a big deal but he came right away after being called. For fishers it is located to very easy access to the Little J. The wife liked the vintage aesthetics combined with modern amenities. If I would add anything maybe a fire pit outside.
Stayed 2 nights in Aug 2022
Response from VrboOwner on Aug 8, 2022
It was our pleasure to host you as our guests and to have been able to resolve the a/c issue for you. There's a new exhaust hose on order and we'll replace the old one this week. A number of our guests have suggested a fire pit, and were our property not adjacent to State Forest Lands and surrounded by woods, this would be easy to add. We must, however, be mindful of the risk of that stray spark igniting the trees--especially in very dry weather. We look forward to hosting you again soon.

Peaceful retreat
Shady, quiet and comfortable location, just down the road and easy walking distance to Little J. Kids ( 8yr and 5yr) enjoyed playing in the creek while dad fished. About 30-40 min from Raystown Lake beaches/ Trough Creek State Park. 15 min to Lincoln Caverns. Plenty to do for long holiday weekend, and kids didn't even miss their routine tv:) Cell service was a bit spotty, but manageable, part of the unplug! Kids loved the historic charm of the home and background story on the cabin. Very well appointed cabin made for easy meals and more time spent enjoying each other's company-- Able to unplug, relax, and engage. Guy was easy to reach when needed and responsive. Entire family had a wonderful time and were sad when it was time to leave. 10 of 10! Thank you!

Great place to spend some quality family time!!
We came up for a family hunting trip and totally loved the cottage and the areas! Even though we didn’t have any luck hunting coming back each day to a nice heated place was wonderful. Brother Jim who came as camp cook extremely loved the retro oven we he prepared us gourmet dinners each night when we returned. We all slept extremely well in the beds and the cozy warmth of the place made falling asleep very easy. We also really enjoyed the DVD collection and watched movies together as a family. I really welcomed idea that there wasn’t any WIFI and spotty cell service. This really made us enjoy each other’s company and the outdoors. Host Guy is an exceptionally nice person and his family history of the Cottage is amazing. I would highly recommend for a family, couple ect… to use this place to break off of cell phone era and spend time together. Good food , good beer , good family , good times!! Thanks again

Thank you, Jacob. We consider our property an opportunity for guests who are intent on unplugging from technology and enjoying nature, good conversation and a comfortable and peaceful setting. We should note that some cell carriers have stronger signals than others. At the cottage, our security/fire alarm system uses Verizon 5G and is entirely reliable; our mobiles are on AT&T and rarely drop calls). Up in the forest, however, mobile service is less reliable, for sure. We're pleased that you found us a good match for you and family as a base for hunting and relaxation. We look forward to your next visit.

Thank you, Karen. We've hosted the nicest people this year from all over the country on Penn State home game weekends. As our football weekend guests have discovered, we're a reasonable alternative to lodging in the State College area. In normal traffic, we're 45 to 50 minutes from the Penn State campus--a quite typical daily commute for many of us here in the Juniata & Shavers Creek Region of the county. Great Weekend
Went to this house for a long weekend to do a little fishing. Had a great time. The house is cozy, clean and a few hundred yards from the Little Juniata. Guy was also a great host. He really bailed us out when my car wouldn't start after a long day on the stream because of a dead battery. We gave him a call, and 20 minutes or so later he showed up with a pair of jumper cables. After we got the car started he called his mechanic for us and arranged for a new battery, even though the auto shop was about to close for the weekend. Guy went the extra mile!

Charming Woods Cottage
I booked this property as a base for fly fishing in the area w friends and we were pleasantly surprised by our experience. The cottage is charmingly quaint, clean and well provisioned... definitely many notches up from the usual rough cabins to which we are accustomed. The screened in porch was especially appreciated on one wet, dreary, un-fishable day. The only thing missing for us was being able to cook/hang by a fire in the evenings which is not allowed due to fire concerns. Therefore, the only improvement I could suggest from our experience would be a level area of slate or gravel with a fire pit or some other contained wood burning area. Guy was an accommodating and unobtrusive host. I will be booking a return engagement w my wife this fall if available.

Pleased to know that our home met your expectations and that you enjoyed your stay--despite the uncooperative weather. And, yes, the cottage is far from the original structure it was when my grandfather built it for his young family in 1902. Our family through the generations has taken considerable pride in the improvements and expansions that followed over the last hundred years. We have always thought of it as the family home--never as a cabin or camp. Thanks also for your ideas on the fire pit; your ideas are certainly worth our further exploration. Perhaps we can one day make this improvement in a way that is safe for the adjoining state forest and private wooded lands around us. An "over-the-back-fence" conversation with our state district forester might be a good place for us to begin. Let us talk in further detail on this topic when you return this fall.

A Wonderful Stay
Lovely, quant, and very comfortable the Barree Guest Cottage proved to be an excellent base for our first exploration of the Raystown Lake area. The owner Guy is extremely friendly and has clearly put a lot of time and effort into ensuring his guests have an easy and stress-free stay. He stopped by shortly after arrival to ensure we were settling-in okay and while we never had need to call upon him, we were none-the-less reassured by his relative proximity and willingness to assist if we were in need of anything. The cottage was a wonderfully peaceful place to return to after a full day of traveling around the lake and while we don’t regret that time exploring, we would definitely recommend planning extra time to just relax and enjoy the surrounding forest. The screened-in porch is perfect for eating your meals or opening a book while listening to nature and the Little Juniata River.

Thanks, Carol, for affirming our efforts to make our guests comfortable. We make it a point to greet each guest shortly upon arrival but are mindful to not be intrusive. And, yes, we are ten minutes away in the event any assistance is needed. While we have guests who come to us to fish the Little J, we find we host just as many with interest in Lake Raystown, the Horseshoe Curve, the Altoona Railroaders Museum, Lincoln Caverns, Penns Cave and other important area attractions--not to mention guests who come just to enjoy our cottage and the hiking trails close by. A great stay on the river
Staying at the cottage is like stepping back in time 100 years, but with modern comforts. The furnishings and decor really add to the old fashioned atmosphere. The interior was spotless and in great condition. The lot is private and shaded. Guy, the owner, takes great pride in the cottage, as it was built by his grandfather. He took every measure to make sure that our stay was comfortable and that we had everything we needed.

Perfect Vacation Cottage
Everything about our stay was perfect. The owner was very quick to respond and thorough in communications. The cottage is lovely and everything you could possibly need is there. The property is beautiful with the woods and stream running through and the river nearby. Would love to stay here again!

Spring Adventure
We had an excellent experience in this historic and interesting spot by the River. Our kids enjoyed sleeping in the loft and using their imaginations on our weekend getaway. We enjoyed backcountry drives from the hollow to State College. Nice to be able to easily get to the college town and return to quiet and comfort. Thanks for a great Mother’s Day weekend with Mother Nature! Kid and parent friendly!

Wonderful respite
Our family of three spent four nights at the Croyle cottage in Baree at the end of March 2021. Our stay was extremely relaxing and the cottage was beautiful. The history of the cottage is fascinating and the owner will fill you in on its history. The antique gas stove and oven work great and the kitchen is appointed nicely. As with every vacation house I have stayed, it is always advisable to bring a good kitchen knife if you intend on cooking frequently. The oil heat comes up to temperature quickly and keeps the house nice and toasty in cooler weather. The beds are comfy and it is nice to fall asleep to the sound of a babbling brook. Coffee on the screened porch was a wonderful way to start the day. The Little Juniata river is a stone’s throw from the cottage and is one of the best fly fishing rivers in the country loaded with trout. Though it was too cold to do so when we spent time here, I understand that the “Little J” is great to tube and kayak. There is a general store just down the road and the Walmart is not too far away. There are amazing hikes within a two-mile radius; the owner made a special trip to bring us maps and information about the local hikes. The Horseshoe Curve is about 20 miles away as is the oldest operating roller-coaster in the world, Leap the Dips at Lakemont Park in Altoona. Our stay at the Croyle cottage really afforded us the relaxation that we desperately needed. We did not have to worry about a thing; the cottage was ready for visitors when we arrived. The owner was very responsive and came out to meet us shortly after we arrived. There is no internet service or cable so we had the opportunity to unplug and have a reason to be incommunicado from our everyday lives. We hope to return to the Croyle cottage soon, perhaps in warmer weather so we can tube the Little J.

Pennsylvania Paradise
This is an area I love to visit to begin with, and the cottage only enriched that experience. It felt like an enchanted step back in time that supported the simplicity of getting away and focusing on a couple of the things that matter most in life - friends and fishing. This is an unbeatable location for trout fisherman, and the fall fishing was fantastic.

Charming
Such a charming cottage with beauty all around it. We went to unplug and forget about all that is going on in the world. This was just the right medicine.

Peace and quiet
The experience was good. It was peaceful. You can hear the river close by. I found though that the trains go past at least every 1/2 hour and we had a little problem with the gas stove. But over all it was nice and rustic. That we both loved and the train did remind you of the old days.
