"Gorgeous, modern hotel right in the city centre!"
We LOVED Hotel Mario and would love to go back! The hotel is gorgeous and has a very modern feel to it (and a great smell too). The staff was super welcoming and friendly. We arrived before check-in so they held onto our bags while we explored the city (they put a sticker on your bag with a number and give you a copy of that sticker to hold on to; you present the sticker when picking up your bags) at no cost. The Opera metro stop is literally right around the corner, which is super convenient if you want to explore all of Madrid. You hit all of the restaurants and shops after just a 1 to 2 min walk. The location of the hotel is amazing! Puerta del Sol, la Plaza Mayor, los jardines Sabatini (gardens), and the palace are all about a 10 to 15 min walk away. Again, it's in a very central location and if something isn't within walking distance, there are many many metro stops nearby to make your way around. Once again, we were really impressed by the staff. Out of all of the hotels we stayed at in Spain, Hotel Mario's was certainly the most warm and friendly. The only downside was the size of the washroom-it was a bit small. Also, keep in mind that most showers in Spain tend to be glass and completely see-through. Overall, we were VERY happy with our stay here and will be sure to recommend it to anyone and everyone.

"Excellent service and location"
The staff was great. They were very helpful and made me feel right at home. The hostel is right on the Gran Via so it's in an excellent location to visit all tourist attractions. The hostel provides comfortable and clean rooms. They were cleaned every day. All I can say is thank you for making my first trip to Spain an enjoyable one. Next year, I will definitely book this hostel again.

"Good hotel with an excellent location"
The location of the hotel was excellent, right on a pedestrian path in the very centre of Madrid's historic district and very close by to the palace, theatre, and basically everything else. The breakfast was excellent, the beds were comfortable, the room and the hotel were very clean, and the AC was decent (it was about 25 degrees in the room while it was 35 degrees outside). The hotel was a bit expensive, but was a good value for money; if I were to visit Madrid again I would return.

A wonderful, clean little place with friendly staff! It's location is right in the middle of the action so it's a little noisy at night, but the central location makes it great to get around.

"Great little place, close to everything in Madrid."
We loved the Hostal Ballesta. First time in a hostal and the experience was all positive. We had a room on the top floor with a small balcony facing the street and had no problems with noise overall. Yes, the neighbourhood is a bit sketchy but don't let that turn you off staying here. It is close to everything! We walked everywhere or, on occassion, took the metro from the Callao or Gran Via stops which are very close. Lots of cafes for morning breakfast and cafe con leche but be aware that opening times do vary with each establishment. We are early risers and found a few nearby that served an early breakfast. The staff at the Hostal Ballesta helped us with all of our information requests. Computers and printers made it easy to check emails and print boarding passes and to search details on hours of operation of the various museums and galleries. Would definitely stay here again on our next trip to Madrid. Room size was more than adequate and the bathroom was clean and functional. If you're used to 4 and 5 star hotels, this might not work for you but the Hostal Ballesta worked for us.

Hotel Plaza Mayor

C/ Atocha, 2, Madrid - Map
Overall, our hotel was good. Pros: The location was excellent and our room was spacious. Cons: The woman who was at the counter during the day and who checked us in was very unfriendly, impatient, and rude; the gentleman at night was delightful. The air conditioning in our room worked minimally. It was very hot the 2 days we were there and the airconditioner seemed stressed!
