48 Hours in Whistler, British Columbia

Only a scenic two hours drive north of Vancouver International Airport,  Whistler is that gem of a destination that calls to travellers year round. There really is no bad time to be in Whistler but if Winter is your season, heading there when the snow is plentiful will be enough to send you into a fit of giggles. Only got a few days? Here’s how to make the most of them.

Arrive at Vancouver international airport. If you’re coming from the east you’ll gain some time on the flight over (the city is on PST)! Use that plane time wisely and catch a nap. You’ll want all of your energy once you hit the ground. The drive out to Whistler is part of the charm! The Sea to Sky highway offers vista views of mountains and ocean for much of your route. You’ll also pass through small town gems like Squamish – home to soaring eagles and often referred to as Canada’s outdoor adventure capital – something to note for your next visit.

This afternoon hit the hills!  With snow or without there’s plenty to do on the mountains . Ski Magazine named Whistler Blackcomb the #1 Overall Resort for 2016 for good reason. A ski and snowboard school offers world-class instruction to all abilities and opportunities to dogsled, try out the  2010 Olympic Bobsleigh course or trade the steep slopes for some cross country respite abound. When the mountain is snow-free it’s a mountain biker’s paradise. Those new to the sport can sign up for the 101 course and learn the ins and outs of the adrenaline-boosting activity.

Ready to refuel? Head for the Bearfoot Bistro – a local institution. From learning how to sabre champagne to donning an goose down jacket to venture into the -32 degree Vodka ice room for a chilly lesson on the world’s best way to cap the perfect night .

Day 2

Depending on how late last night went you’ll likely be looking for something hearty to start your morning. Head for Crepe Montagne where you’ll find a cozy atmosphere and friendly service alongside your authentic French crepes.

Start the morning with some introspection and enlightenment at the Squamish Lil’Wat Centre. A short walk through the village will lead you to it’s gorgeous centre that showcases the history of First Nations’ in the area.

For afternoon fun head out on a helicopter tour! Take in the views of local glaciers from high above them. When the adventure is over and you’re back in town, be sure to pose for a photo with the Olympic rings. They’re backlit making night time shots as great as daytime ones.
