Description

An intriguing trip addressed to those who want to know what the communist period in Warsaw and Poland was like. Political anecdotes, the ideas of rebuilding Warsaw after the Second World War and the absurdities of everyday life of ordinary residents of the city. We will drive a classic communist car, that is, a historic minivan - Nysa 522.

A professional guide will narrate a tour of landmark communist buildings and local history.

You will know the history of the symbol of Warsaw, the Palace of Culture and Science, which was created on the sea of post war ruin. You will see the utopian architectural ideas of the communist authorities - the Party House of People's Republic of Poland and the Ministry of Agriculture. You will go to Plac Konstytucji (Constitution Square) to get to know the MDM (Marszalkowska Residential District) designed to fit the communist ideology. At the end, we will visit the only such place in Warsaw - Museum of Life Under Communism. A replica of a real flat, propaganda films screened in a mini cinema hall, a reconstructed communist cafe await you there.. We will learn how the inhabitants of Warsaw used to live like…

Experience the absurdities of communism and set off with us to a city full of history!

I booked with Expedia for a hotel pickup. My hotel was in the central train station area. Another option would have been the nearby Hard Rock Café. When I got my confirmation late afternoon on the day before the tour, I was told the pickup would be at the Sigmund Column in Old Town. I contacted them via email but no reply by the time I left my hotel the next morning. I took the city bus to the Sigmund Column. My guide, Arthur, arrived promptly at 9:40am in a cute pink retro bus. I was the first and only guest on board. The first thing we did was to drive to the Hard Rock to pick up two more people! After the tour, I got a message from the tour company that their info from Expedia sad a Sigmund Column pickup. Something must be wrong somewhere. Minus one star. The tour was interesting and lasted until 1:30pm. The guide had good English. He grew up in the communist era so had personal stories to tell as well. Highly recommended, but confirm pickup location well in advance.

I had a wonderful time riding around town in the vintage vehicle learning about Warsaw history and the communist era. There were two vehicles filled with tourists, I don't know what the other guide did during the driving segments, but my driver was very engaging and informative both at the stops and during the journey between sites. It was a real joy. In the middle of the tour we stopped to sample various traditional Polish cuisine, which was also enjoyable. I was really impressed with the tour. The guide encouraged questions and discussion about the history and city. If the same guide does other tours with the company I'd enjoy signing up for those as well the next time I'm in Warsaw. Highly recommend.

The Tour Guide Conrad was friendly, humourous and exceptionally passionate and knowledgable. The tour was well paced and not too boring or overwhelming. If you get hangry take a little snack but don't over eat as the local food provided is plentiful.
