So many highlights enrich this historical part of town called Castello, that dates back to the early XIII century and we are going to explore them all by walking through the narrow streets of cobblestone, bordered by old palaces and panoramic terraces. You are going to experience a real dive into the past!
The itinerary starts in front of Porta Cristina, access to Piazza Arsenale and the northern entrance of what was a fortified headquarter for the Pisans and Spanish rulers for centuries, but also the residential area where aristocrats used to live.
Immediately, the old Pisan tower, San Pancrazio, built the first years of the XIV century, reveals itself, thanks to its impressive height.
From Piazza Indipendenza we move to Piazza Palazzo, to admire the elegant facades Royal Palace and the ancient City Palace. Here we visit the Cathedral with its magnificent interiors and works of art, such as the pulpit of Master William of Pisa. Afterwards we reach Santa Croce Bastion with an amazing view on Largo Carlo Felice and the area next to the harbour. From there a few steps take us to the nearby Elefant Tower, that proudly rises above the old Stampace district.
Following the medieval surveillance path we pass near the Lion's Gate, one of the two ancient accesses on the district's southern border and enjoy the view from the panoramic terrace of San Remy Bastion, with its neoclassical triumphal arch and monumental stair cases. Here finishes our visit.
The itinerary is very comfortable (only downhill walking) and therefore it's ideal for everyone.
