Burana Tower is one of Kyrgyzstan’s best known archaeological sites. Burana is also home to a museum of important archaeological pieces that tell the history of the Silk Road and Kyrgyzstan’s place on it. The Tower is all that’s left of the city of Balasagun, which was the capital of the Karakhanid Empire in the 11th century. There is also a small collection of balbals, or kurgan stelae, near the tower accompanied by petroglyphs from the 2nd century BC that were brought here to be displayed.

  • 2 stops
  • Meals: breakfast, snacks
  • Accommodation: Overnight in yurt camp
Konorchek Canyons
  • 3h
Konorchek Canyon is an amazing tourist destination in the eastern part of the Kyrgyz Range. It looks like a miniature Grand Canyon in the middle of the Tian-Shan Mountains! Thousands of years of soil erosion have made this place incredible. Even to this day, it is possible to find the remains of shells from ancient times when there was a sea. Despite the fact that the canyon is in the middle of the mountains, the temperature here is on average warmer than in the Chui Valley. There is practically no snow in the winter and the temperature hardly drops below 40 degrees Celsius in summer. The way to the canyon passes along the canal of a long dried up river. At times, the rocks are so close that there is a passage about a metre and a half wide. A very unusual phenomenon for the Tien Shan.

North of the city is an extensive field of glacial boulders, many with pictures scratched or picked into their surfaces. Some of these petroglyphs date from the Bronze Age (about 1500 BC), but most are Saka-Usun (8th century BC to 1st century AD), predating the arrival of Kyrgyz in the area. Saka priests used this sacred site for sacrifices and other rites to the sun god and they lived in the settlements that are currently underwater in the Cholpon-Ata bay.
