What you can expect

Imagine what life was like in the ancient Hawaii of yesteryear on this outdoor escape to the untouched coastline of Kauai's North Shore. Trek barefoot through the sand and hop over lava rocks as you seek out native creatures like monk seals and sea turtles.

Get picked up from your hotel or meet your guide in Koloa or Anahola, depending on where you're staying, and drive north to a tralihead above the beach. Chat with your guide about how far you want to hike, whether you want a longer 4.5-mile (7-km) beach walk or a leisurely 2-mile (3-km) stroll. Kick off your shoes to walk through the sand and soak in the serenity of this quiet, undeveloped stretch of coastline.

Slip on shoes to clamber over lava rocks and rugged shores, and watch for migratory seabirds like Laysan albatross, great frigatebirds, and red-footed boobies soaring overhead. You might even catch a glimpse of endangered Hawaiian monk seals or honu (green sea turtles) basking in the sun. Reach a promontory that offers sweeping views in both directions, and then look to the ground to study the beautiful sea shells that wash ashore with the waves. Your guide brings along a trash bag or 2, so you can make a positive impact on the environment of the islands by helping to leave the beach a little cleaner than you found it.
