Description

Embark on a thrilling, cold-weather adventure that takes you deep into Los Glaciares National Park for spectacular views of the Perito Moreno Glacier. This 97-square-mile (250-sq-km) ice formation is one of the most significant natural attractions of the Patagonia region.

After convenient pick-up from your hotel, meet a friendly, bilingual guide who leads you to a small shelter within Los Glaciares National Park. In a group of no more than 20 travellers, follow your guide along the shores of Argentino Lake, taking in sights of sparkling fresh water and icy mountain peaks in the distance. The edge of the mighty Perito Moreno Glacier soon comes into view, sweeping you away with its sheer ice walls and jagged peaks.

Strap some crampons to your boots and set off on a mini trekking adventure that brings you closer to the glacier than you could ever imagine. Follow your guide along the icy terrain and listen to commentary about the area's wildlife and geology. Small lagoons, gullies, and crevasses wait to be discovered at every turn.

Make your way to a dock and board a small boat for a cruise along the glacier's main wall, letting you marvel at the striking white and blue scenery that defines this region. After disembarking the boat and making your way back the shelter, your experience ends with return transport to your hotel in El Calafate.

This was worth the 3-hour flight from Buenos Aires and the time spent. The views alone are worth the trip and the trekking adds another element to an overall great experience. The bus was on time, the driver accommodating and personable (even if no spoken English), the ride was comfortable and the sites in between worth the ride itself (the driver even stopped along the highway to allow us to observe a flock of condors in a nearby field). Our guides (Mathias and Mathias) were excellent, polite and eager to explain a lot of the details relative to the history and makeup of the glaciers. The experience with the crampons was great: they definitely do their job on helping you walk on the ice and they made the walk so much more enjoyable. At the end, we spent 1 hour on the lookout walkways: I would personally need 1 hr more to be able to walk along and observe without having to think that I have to run back quickly to the waiting bus.

Trip of a lifetime, guides were amazing, extremely well managed and loved the whiskey and chocolate at the end, awesome end to an awesome trek. Only missing thing I would say is to do an extra 5mins on the water going closer to the glacier on the water. You are already 95% of the way there, it is a real shame that you don't go closer on the water.
