Description

Visit the Lamanai Ruins – one of Belize's oldest Mayan sites – and discover a beautiful mix of river and ruins. Hop into a boat to cruise toward the ruins on the Rio Nuevo, taking in the jungle scenery as your guide shares insight into the Mayans' history, culture and mysterious decline.

From Belize City, depart in an air-conditioned van for a quick 45-minute drive to Orange Walk, a quaint town on the edge of the Rio Nuevo. Step aboard a river boat and cruise through a rich haven of vibrant flowers, towering trees and diverse wildlife – keep your eyes peeled for tropical birds stepping across the lily pads, spider monkeys in the treetops and crocodiles on the sun-soaked riverbanks.

From the entrance to the New River Lagoon, catch your first glimpse of Lamanai—the temple ruins’ name means “submerged insect” or “submerged crocodile.” This elaborate archaeological site dates back as early as the 16th century BC and is comprised of 3 larger pyramids, residential areas, open plazas, and a Mesoamerican ritual ball court.

Take note of the half-burnt Catholic churches nearby – they were unsuccessfully erected by Spanish settlers in an attempt to convert the Maya – and wander the complex of partially excavated temples. Admire the visible portion of the Temple of the Jaguar Masks as your guide narrates the once-powerful civilisation’s religious beliefs, advanced understanding of maths, science and astronomy, and even their role in the history of chocolate, the 365-day calendar and basketball.

The drive, boat trip and Lamanai were all very interesting. Excellent driver and guides. Lots of exercise, especially if you climb the ruins. We took a longer trip with Jaguar--much better than the shorter cruise ship tours.
