Create a Japanese hanging scroll that tells your own storey in this private calligraphy workshop in Hiroshima.
Your experience takes place in a calm Japanese-style studio, about a 15-minute walk from Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. With no other guests in your group, you can learn and create at your own pace. No calligraphy experience is needed.
First, learn about Japanese calligraphy, hanging scrolls, and Yojijukugo—meaningful phrases written with four Kanji characters. Then, use a traditional Kumano brush made in Hiroshima to practise how to hold the brush and make basic strokes.
After practising, choose what you would like to write. You can select a Yojijukugo that reflects your wishes, values, or a memory from your trip. For example, Ichigo Ichie (一期一会) expresses the idea of treasuring each meeting. If you prefer, you can choose a word written with one or two Kanji characters instead. Your instructor will explain the meanings and help you find a word that feels right for you.
When you are ready, write your final piece and mount it onto a Japanese hanging scroll called a Kakejiku. Choose from two scroll colours to complete your work.
At the end of the workshop, take home your one-of-a-kind hanging scroll. The finished scroll is approximately 80 cm long and comes in a protective tube, so you can carry it during your travels.
