Full-Day Panda Volunteer Programme at Dujiangyan Base

Description

Get an up-close look at giant pandas and donate your time with a day of volunteering at Dujiangyan Giant Panda Center, also called Dujiangyan Panda Valley. Feed pandas and learn about their development at this breeding base, part of the efforts to reintroduce these animals into the wild.

Meet your guide at your Chengdu hotel and embark on a 1.5-hour drive to Dujiangyan Giant Panda Center, a non-profit centre. As your volunteering session officially begins, receive a uniform and meet the panda keepers who introduce you to the procedures of the programme. In the morning feed the animals, clean their enclosures, and make panda cakes.

Enjoy a simple lunch in the canteen or opt to buy lunch at a local restaurant run by farmers before you rest for an hour and relax with a panda film. Then clean bamboo, weigh pandas’ feces—an important way to monitor their health—and attend a lecture to learn about progression of the iconic animals from infancy to adulthood.

After the cuddly creatures’ second feeding, take a break with a leisurely walk around the base. When the programme ends, receive a volunteer certificate to commemorate the meaningful day before your ride back to your hotel in Chengdu.

We had a wonderful guide who made every effort to ensure we enjoyed our experience. Extremely hospitable, knowledgeable and obliging. There are many organisations offering this experience and I’d certainly recommend this one. The only hesitation I have is that the Dujiangyan’s programme was a bit light-on. Essentially it comprises cleaning a panda cage by picking-up the 💩 , washing the floor; then hand feeding the panda carrot and panda cake through the cage, watching a documentary on pandas, a lunch, and then shaping pre-mixed panda cake mix into blocks. It was a full day but there were long gaps of nothing, so it could’ve been compressed by 1-1.5hrs. I was disappointed the advertised opportunity to sit next to a panda had been removed; so the closest you could get to a panda was through the cage.

Our guide snow who from China highlights could not have done enough for us, anyone having the private panda volunteer trip should ask for her, snow answered any questions we had and couldn’t do enough for us, highly recommend snow. Mr p. Stewart
