Live a truly unique experience hiking in the Dominican Republic! We’ll take you on a half-day hike to explore the age-old caves in the remote Los Haitises National Park from Samaná.
Los haitises meaning “hilly land” in Taino language was considered a highland by the Taino people. Stretching over 1,600 km², the park provides beautiful vistas of multiple high rock formations (30m ) mushrooming out of water. Its sinkholes, caverns, and lush mangrove forest along the coast provide a complete adventure package to the hikers.
We’ll begin this beautiful adventure from Samana, departing from the Samaná Bay and reach the Haitises.
Upon reaching, we’ll trek through the green rainforest. You’ll be amazed at the variety of medicinal plants and beautiful birds in the area. And did you know the entertainer- Jurassic Park was shot at one of the locations in this far-away park?
We’ll be able to spot the beautiful Ridgway’s hawk, the Hispaniolan Emerald, herons and pelicans among others. As we’ll complete our journey through the rain forest, we’ll arrive at the magnificent Caño Salado.
After visiting the giant rock formations, we’ll head towards the Caves. These caverns were created due to water erosion. Be prepared to learn about the petroglyphs and ancient drawings from the pre-Columbian era. You’ll have a chance to interpret the age-old Taino artwork!
Next, we’ll take a boat to see the beautiful Cueva de la Arena cave. This 940m long cavern stretches along a cliff to the coast of Samaná Bay and has intriguing pictographs plus amazing Kayaking in the mangroves.
Later, we’ll head back to our starting point, having spent an incredible day in the quaint national park.
