The Chauchilla Cemetery, a necropolis situated in a desert region about 28 kilometres from Nazca, has a troubled history of looting by treasure hunters. These looters ravaged the pre-Inca burial site, plundering it of all valuable items such as ceramics, textiles, and gold and silver artefacts. In their quest for treasure, they left the graves desecrated and scattered human remains across the desert, a sight still visible today.
A visit to Chauchilla Cemetery offers a tour of twelve tombs. In addition to the skeletons and skulls, visitors can observe braids of human hair, fragments of textiles, pieces of ceramics, and remnants of corn and shells. This hauntingly preserved site provides a poignant glimpse into the past, revealing the cultural and historical significance of the people who once inhabited the area.
