What you can expect

  • Venice is a city tourists think they know. Cannaregio is the part they don't.

    This small-group walking tour spends three hours moving through one of Venice's most residential areas, eating and drinking the way locals actually do. It opens with pizza from a long-standing bakery on Strada Nova, then settles into a local osteria for DOCG prosecco and a pair of cicchetti — a traditional meatball and polenta with shrimp in saor.

    The walk continues past Ponte Chiodo and through the Misericordia, away from the main tourist routes, then on to the Jewish Ghetto, founded in 1516 and one of the oldest in the world, its history layered into every street you walk. The last food stop is a bacaro for a proper Venetian spritz and two more cicchetti, including the city's beloved salted cod spread.

    The tour closes with gelato or tiramisù, depending on the time of the year, eaten at the water's edge, where Venice finally goes quiet.
