Join us on this guided route about the Spanish Civil War in the city of Oviedo from July 1936 until the fall of the Northern Front in October 1937. We'll learn about the military conspiracy of Aranda, the sites of the first battles, the still-visible marks of the bombings during the Republican siege, and the consequences of Francoist repression.
Denis Soria, a historian and official tour guide, will accompany us through the streets of the Asturian capital on a journey through our recent history.
Our tour will start in front of the Hotel Reconquista, where we'll learn about the details of the conspiracy hatched by Colonel Aranda against the Republic and visit the sites of the first battles: the assault on the seat of the civil government and the Santa Clara barracks.
Next, we'll learn about the city's situation during the evolution of the Northern Front and the role of figures such as Lieutenant Colonel Teijeiro in breaking the siege. We'll also see the marks of the fighting, including unexploded shells still embedded in the façades, which bear witness to the almost total destruction of the city after 15 months of war, when barely thirty buildings remained intact.
Our tour will end in front of the Cathedral tower, scarred by cannon fire, where we'll take the opportunity to talk about the victims of the Republican bombings and Francoist repression, which claimed the lives of prominent figures such as Rector Leopoldo Alas.
A must-see tour to discover an episode in our history that every native of Oviedo should know about. Are you coming prepared for war?
