Day 1: Golden Circle Tour

Thingvellir National Park

The first stop of the day is Þingvellir National Park, where you will have a chance to see Thingvellir lake, the second biggest in Iceland, and walk in a rift where North American and Euro-Asian tectonic plates meet. It is also known as the site of Althing, the first parliament in the world that was established year 930 AD. That’s actually where the name of the park Þingvellir (e. Fields of the Parliament) originates from. If you are not in any rush our guide will walk with you over to the Öxarárfoss Waterfall which falls into the rift and merges with Thingvellir lake.

Geysir

We continue with of journey to Gullfoss waterfall, the second-largest waterfall in Iceland. It is only a 5-minute walk from the car park to the viewpoint of the waterfall.

Kerid Crater

Kerid is a volcanic crater lake located in southern Iceland, near the town of Selfoss. It is part of the volcanic zone of Iceland's southwestern region and is believed to have been formed around 3000 years ago during a volcanic eruption. The crater is approximately 270 metres wide and 55 metres deep, with a lake at the bottom that is a striking blue-green colour. The red and orange colours of the crater's walls contrast beautifully with the surrounding green moss and black volcanic rock, making it a popular tourist destination for its unique natural beauty. Visitors can walk along the rim of the crater for a panoramic view or descend to the lake's edge for a closer look. Gullfoss Waterfall

Gullfoss, or "Golden Falls," is one of Iceland's most iconic waterfalls, renowned for its breathtaking beauty and sheer power. Located in the canyon of the Hvítá river in Southwest Iceland, Gullfoss is part of the famous Golden Circle tourist route. The waterfall cascades down two tiers, dropping a total of 32 metres (105 feet) into a rugged canyon. On sunny days, the mist from the falls creates shimmering rainbows, adding to its allure. Gullfoss is not only a testament to Iceland's stunning natural beauty but also a symbol of conservation, as it was saved from hydroelectric development in the early 20th century.

Seljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss is a waterfall in Iceland. Seljalandsfoss is located in the South Region of Iceland right by Route 1 and the road that leads to Þórsmörk Road 249. The waterfall drops 60 m and is part of the Seljalands River that has its origin in the volcano glacier Eyjafjallajökull.

Skogafoss

The Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in the country with a width of 15 metres (49 feet) and a drop of 60 m (200 ft). Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow is normally visible on sunny days. According to legend, the first Viking settler in the area, Þrasi Þórólfsson, buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall.

Black Sand Beach

Reynisfjara is a world-famous black-sand beach found on the South Coast of Iceland, just beside the small fishing village of Vík í Mýrdal. With its enormous basalt stacks, roaring Atlantic waves and stunning panoramas, Reynisfjara is widely considered to be the most beautiful example of Iceland’s black sand beaches. In 1991, National Geographic voted Reynisfjara as one of the Top 10 non-tropical beaches to visit on the planet.

Fjadrargljufur Canyon

Diamond Beach, also known as Jökulsárlón Beach, is a mesmerising natural wonder located on the southeastern coast of Iceland. It gets its name from the glistening icebergs that wash up on the black sand shoreline, resembling dazzling diamonds scattered along the beach. The icebergs originate from the nearby Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where chunks of ice break off from the glacier and float towards the ocean. These icebergs are carried by the current and eventually reach the shore, creating a breathtaking sight that is truly unique to Diamond Beach.

Jokulsarlon

Jökulsárlón, often referred to as Glacier Lagoon, is a mesmerising natural wonder located in southeastern Iceland. It is renowned for its stunning display of floating icebergs, crystal-clear glacial waters, and breathtaking panoramic views. Formed by the retreat of Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, Jökulsárlón is now a large glacial lake filled with icebergs that have calved from the glacier. These icebergs come in various sizes and shapes, ranging from small chunks to massive pieces of ice.
