Tokyo rates safest city in the world

In many big cities, travellers are marked as easy targets for scams. However, you should keep more than just pickpocketing in mind when selecting your next travel destination. Recent outbreaks of disease and cyber hacking have made both health and digital security topics to consider when sightseeing. Recently, The Economist released a list of the safest cities for 2015 on Jan. 26, and here’s what the  publication found.

Overall safest cities

  1. Tokyo
  2. Singapore
  3. Osaka
  4. Stockholm
  5. Amsterdam
  6. Sydney
  7. Zurich
  8. Toronto
  9. New York
  10. Hong Kong

These are the top 10 safest cities, based on a digital, health, manufacturing and personal safety results. What’s most stunning about these results is that Tokyo is the city with the largest population in the world, at more than 13 million in May 2014. However, as the Japanese capital, the city takes security measures seriously.

The published report only had the top 50 safest cities in the world accounted for. Aside from Toronto, Montreal was the only other Canadian city to make the list. Other locations in the U.S. included San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

No matter where your holidays take you, it’s always best to practise caution in an unfamiliar locale. While this doesn’t mean you have to limit your travels to locations not appearing on this list, you should also watch your pocketbook when roaming the streets of NYC.
