Low Cost Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is one of the larger Caribbean islands and a great destination for travellers wanting to get some Caribbean sun. It can be very cost prohibitive to visit, but if you’re savvy and flexible, it’s possible to have an amazing vacation without completely breaking the bank.

While there’s no doubt you’ll be itching for some Caribbean sun in the depths of the Canadian winter, this is the high season and you’ll experience high prices. Instead, shoot for some time between May and November. Low season means there are deals to be had on everything from airfare to accommodations. Of course you’ll want to double check weather forecasts as this is also peak season for hurricanes.

If you’re seeking time to simply chill on the beach, Puerto Rico offers something many other Caribbean islands don’t. Both budget lodging as well as luxury resorts are located within similar distances to the beach. Another option for housing is to look into staying at a paradore. These are country inns spread throughout the island. You won’t get the luxury of a five star hotel but you will have an inexpensive and authentic holiday. If you’re relying on public transportation, this may not be the best option as many are not centrally located.

You don’t have to worry about food causing a dent in your Puerto Rico holiday plans. It’s completely possible to eat incredibly well in Puerto Rico, even while on a budget. Instead of opting for an expensive hotel breakfast, duck into one of the many panaderias (bakeries) found across the island. You’ll eat well for a fraction of the hotel breakfast. Plentiful fruit and snacks can be purchased just about everywhere. If you’re on a budget, keep an eye out for where the locals are eating. Chances are the food not only will be excellent but inexpensive.

Puerto Rico’s number one attraction is its beautiful beaches that are absolutely free to use. Pack your own snorkel and goggles in your luggage and enjoy this activity at no cost. If you will be staying in San Juan, there are plenty of free activities happening at all times of year. Old San Juan has seen a gentrification, so walk through and see the governor’s office and mansion (it’s claimed to be the oldest in the western hemisphere). You can’t miss El Morro, the fort that towers over the San Juan Bay. The best news? It’s a US National Historic Site and entrance is free. Just a half an hour from San Juan is El Yunque, a tropical rainforest that has well maintained trails for walking. Pack your swimsuit and cool down under a waterfall or dip in the river.
