Hungary rents out an entire village

Secretly, everyone wants their own village to reign over. Hungary’s in on this little secret, which is why the central European country has begun advertising an entire village for rent.

According to The Associated Press, Hungarian Mayor Kristof Pajer has put up the small village of Megyer for rent at the price of about CAD$950 per day. Since he began advertising the village rental in early March, reservations for nearly 300 guests, as well as 300 inquiries about the rental, have been made.

The village is booked solid for August, and April and May’s schedules are almost full. Guests are coming from countries far and wide, including the U.S., South Africa, Australia and Sweden.

The aim of renting out the village is to raise some much-needed funds. The money brought in will be used to upgrade the village.

What are renters getting?
The tiny village, located just 200 miles southwest of the capital city of Budapest, has a population of only 18 people and dates back to the 11th century.

Renters have access to seven guest houses that can accommodate nearly 40 people in addition to 4 hectares of farmland, which is home to chickens, horses and other farm animals. As Pajer explained to The Independent, the serenity of the hamlet may be the biggest draw of all.

“We offer all sorts of programmes to our guests, but most are simply captivated by the surroundings and the quiet,” Pajer told The Independent. “Once they sit out in the meadow with a bottle of rose wine, nothing else matters.”

Another big perk of renting Megyer is that you can choose to rename the streets of the village during your stay. And, of course, you will reign over the townspeople with the title of “Deputy Mayor.”
