Cats, Owls, and Goats: Best Animal-themed Cafes of 2015

Some cafes have croissants, some have double-shot caramel macchiatos, and some have, well, owls. If you’ve always wanted feathers floating around as you shake cinnamon into your coffee, there are definitely a few wacky coffee shops out there for you. Here are some of the best animal-themed cafes of 2015:

Owl Cafes

Before the spring of 2015, the most famous owl in London was Harry Potter’s Hedwig. Not anymore. In April, Annie the Owl opened a pop-up owl cafe, resulting in over 80,000 applications for the 1,400 visitor passes. Patrons were able to sip on their mochas and tea while owls landed on their heads, arms, and nearby perches. Yes, it was a “hoot.” And yes, there are more owl cafes on the horizon.

Anyone who has a cat knows that felines couldn’t care less if you’re drinking coffee, working on your computer, or watching TV. If your lap looks comfortable, you will be reduced from a person to a seat. If you’re down with this, then make your way to any of the cat cafes that have popped up in Quebec, California, and parts of Europe. Many of these shops feature feline adoptions. This way you can enjoy a purr-fect cup of coffee before you take a new buddy home with you.

Bunny Cafes

Do you prefer hip-hop or hippity hop at your coffee shop? If you chose the latter, make a stop in Asia, where bunny cafes are one of the latest waves of cool. The rabbits are allowed to roam freely around the tables, as coffee drinkers take in their morning lattes. It can get a bit “hare-y” if all the bunnies choose to congregate around you, but that’s just part of the charm. You might want to hop to it grabbing a seat; these cafes tend to fill up quickly.

Goat Cafes

It’s common to see goatees inside coffee shops, so why not real live goats? Head to Japan, where goat cafes are the hottest places to be. While customers are highly interested in watching the animals play in their glass pens, the goats couldn’t give a bleat about the attention. If you’ve found that you ate too many chocolate muffins during your time at the shop, take one of the furry beasts for a walk. Why do some cafes offer this? Because “Would you like to walk a goat on a leash?” is a far more fun question than “Would you like room for cream?”

Dog Cafes

This may be biased, but life is 100% better when there’s a weenie dog in the room. Luckily, South Korea understands this, which is why there are dog cafes in the Land of Morning Calm. The pooches are allowed to sit on the chairs, walk on the couches, and play with you as you sip on the morning drip. Best yet, many of the pups are up for adoption, so you can pick out a hound as you purchase local grounds.

Don’t you think it’s time to upgrade from pet-friendly cafes to coffee shops full of barn owls and goats? Luckily, some of the best new cafes have nothing to do with gluten-free cookies and are all about the cage-free rabbits, dogs, cats, and birds.

What’s your favourite wacky café?
