Welcome to Santa María Atzompa, a charming village renowned for its a rich tradition of pottery. Today, we'll visit the workshop, run by a talented local. As we step into the workshop, you'll immediately notice the earthy aroma of clay and the vibrant colours of finished pieces. Ana María, a master artisan, greets us warmly. She shares that her passion for pottery began in childhood, inspired by her parents who were also artisans. Finally, we visit the display area, showcasing a stunning array of pottery. From functional kitchenware to intricate decorative pieces, each item tells a storey of cultural heritage and artistic innovation. The work is not only cherished locally but also sought after by collectors worldwide Before we leave, don't forget to browse the shop for a unique souvenir. San Antonio Arrazola (Pass by)
Welcome to Arrazola, the vibrant heart of alebrije craftsmanship! Today, we'll explore a workshop where these fantastical creatures come to life. As we enter the workshop, the air is filled with the scent of freshly carved wood and the sight of colourful paints. Our host, a skilled artisan, greets us warmly and begins by explaining the origins of alebrijes. These whimsical creatures, often a blend of various animals, are carved from copal wood, a material native to the region. Our tour starts with the selection of the wood. The artisan shows us how they choose pieces of copal based on their shape and size, envisioning the creature that will emerge. Using machetes and knives, they skilfully carve the wood, allowing the natural form to guide their creativity. The artisan shares stories of how this tradition has been passed down through generations, preserving the cultural heritage of the community.
