What you can expect

  • Enjoy a full-day adventure to the city of Sparta. A city which offers you a ‘laconic’ journey back in time throughout Greek history.

Depart Kalamata and journey for less than 2 hours to the historic town of Sparta. Cross the Taygetos mountain range, full of myths and traditions. Stop to take photos of the archaeological site of Keadas, where, according to the historian Plutarch, the ancient Spartans used to throw their weak and deformed infants into the cavern.
Learn the dark history of Sparta as you explore the ancient site of the former city-state of Ancient Greece. See the remains of the Acropolis of Sparta and other monuments of the sixth century BC, including the Ancient Theatre, Temple of Chalkioikos Athena, stores of the agora, Persian Gallery and more. Get valuable information about each monument and learn more about the everyday lives of the Spartans and their kings.
Depart the Acropolis and visit the Tomb of King Leonidas, the most famous ruler of ancient Sparta. Feel the respect that the Spartans held for their kings, and get a better understanding of their frugal lifestyle. Continue to modern-day Sparta, where the Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil in the South West will allow you to reflect on the importance of the olive tree to the survival of the local people over the centuries.
Discover how the ancestors of today's residents collected the fruit of the olive trees, and how technology has evolved over the years. Savour traditional Mediterranean dishes at one of the local restaurants before your return journey to Kalamata.
