Samarkand is 2,750 years old, and its stones hold stories no sign can tell.
Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum
Start at the tomb of Amir Timur, whose ribbed blue dome later inspired the Taj Mahal. Hear about 1941, when scientists opened the tomb despite a warning of a curse, and war reached the Soviet Union days later.
Registan Square
Three madrasahs, built over two centuries: Ulugh Beg in 1420, Sher-Dor in 1636 and Tillya-Kori in 1660. You may know Registan from photos, but standing in the middle of the square is something else. Look for the tigers on Sher-Dor.
Bibi-Khanym Mosque
Amir Timur built it with treasure from his India campaign, and elephants hauled its stones. Hear the legend of the queen and the architect.
Siyob Bazaar
Taste fresh Samarkand bread, nuts, dried fruits and sweets in the busy bazaar next door.
Hazrat Khizr Mosque
Visit one of the city's oldest places of worship, on a hill with views over old Samarkand.
Shah-i-Zinda
End at the “Living King”, named after the legend that the Prophet's cousin never died. Climb between mausoleums covered in turquoise and cobalt tiles.
Go private for a guide in your language and a car from your hotel to Gur-e-Amir; from there, the tour continues on foot. Or choose All-Inclusive: your tickets are pre-booked, so while others stand in long ticket queues, you walk straight in. After a carpet workshop visit, a car takes you back to your hotel.
