What you can expect

Discover Rotterdam’s seafaring soul at the Maritiem Museum Rotterdam, where the maritime world comes alive in a way that’s fun, hands-on, and surprisingly relevant to everyday life. Set beside the oldest and largest museum harbour in the Netherlands, the museum sits on the very spot where Rotterdam’s world port storey began—so you’re not just learning about history, you’re standing in it.

Inside, travel through the Netherlands’ maritime past and present with contemporary exhibitions for both big and small adventurers. Hear personal stories, see standout collection pieces, and dive into themes that shaped the country. from shipbuilding and trade to life in the harbour today. Don’t miss Maritime Women, which brings forward the often-untold stories of women who worked in shipping, ports, fisheries, and shipbuilding, some sailing along, others even turning pirate, through objects, photos, letters, and powerful personal accounts. Step into a shipyard in the interactive All Aboard! (Te Water!) exhibition and discover how Dutch vessels were designed and built across the centuries. Then hop on a virtual metro in Destination Harbour City to see how a small settlement grew into Europe’s largest port, through memorable objects and local Rotterdam stories.

For an immersive challenge, enter the Offshore Experience: suited up with a safety vest and helmet, you’ll feel like you’re on an offshore platform with a dramatic 360° projection, guiding a helicopter, lifting cargo in rough seas, and exploring how oil, gas, and wind energy are generated at sea, plus innovations for the future.

Outside, the Maritiem Museum Harbour is a highlight in its own right, with historic ships, cranes, workshops, and the lighthouse Het Lage Licht, where you can watch “100 years of harbour in 7 minutes.” Wrap up with a coffee or lunch at museum café Het Lage Licht, overlooking the water.
