What you can expect

Embark on an off-road expedition in a Land Rover through the Laurisilva forest, followed by a rewarding hike to the summit of Pico do Arieiro, where breathtaking views of Madeira await. Later, trek along the levada canals to see local farmers harvesting sugar cane before reaching the coastal village of Caniçal.

Prepare for a full-day adventure and be sure to pack a bottle of water along with a few snacks before meeting your tour guide at your hotel lobby. Departing from Funchal, your adventure begins with a drive into the Laurisilva Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The mild, subtropical climate makes it easy to explore this 40-million-year-old forest, where ancient trees stretch deep down into the valleys, while waterfalls cascade from the cliffs above, creating a truly magical atmosphere.

After touring the forest, head out on foot to reach the summit of Pico do Arieiro where panoramic views of Madeira Island await. Your next stop is the Miradouro da Guindaste viewpoint, located at the northeastern tip of the island. Here, dramatic sea cliffs meet the Atlantic, with waves crashing against the rugged rocky shore below.

Continue south to Porto da Cruz, where Portuguese settlers established one of the island’s oldest Catholic parishes. Towering above the region is the majestic Penha de Águia, home to endangered seabirds. Finally, visit Caniçal, a historic 15th-century fishing village on Madeira’s eastern coast. The stark landscape, with its sparse bushes contrasting the lush forests to the west, offers a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere. The expedition concludes with a return trip.
