Wheaton Aston Lock, Staffordshire. This is on the Shropshire Union Canal, opened in 1835, and engineered by Thomas Telford. The lock alters the water level by seven feet (just over two metres).

The picture shows the scene from Wheaton Aston Lock. The black pillar in the foreground is a water point for boats. The brick building further away by the tow-path is a boaters' sanitary station. The white building past the boats is The Hartley Arms, by Tavern Bridge.

Wheaton Aston Bridge, Staffordshire. This is bridge No 18 on the Shropshire Union Canal, which was opened in 1835 as the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal, engineered by Thomas Telford. Through the arch you will see Wheaton Aston Lock, the first one since the stop lock at Autherley eight miles to the south-east. Telford's policy was to create the shortest canal possible with his technology, building many cuttings and embankments to avoid the alternatives of increasing the distance by meandering along the contours (Brindley's 18th century style) and building locks, both of which would have slowed traffic considerably. Railways were, at that time, taking an increasing amount of the canal companies' business.
