Traveling to St. John, USVI? — Read This First St. John is unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean. Wild, resilient, and deeply rooted in its history, the island rewards travelers who come with open eyes and open hearts. Before you arrive, here’s what you need to know. What St. John *is* Roughly two-thirds of the island is Virgin Islands National Park. That means pristine beaches, hiking trails, ancient petroglyphs, sugar mill ruins, and reefs alive with turtles and fish. Life here is small-scale, nature-first, and deliberately unpolished. What St. John *isn't* It’s not an all-inclusive resort island, and it won’t feel like Cozumel or Turks & Caicos. Nightlife is low-key, infrastructure is simple, and “island time” is a real thing. Service is friendly but unhurried, and a warm greeting (“Good morning,” “Good afternoon”, “Good night”) goes a very long way. Getting Here & Around You’ll fly into St. Thomas and connect by passenger ferry to Cruz Bay (~30 minutes). If you rent a car on St Thomas, car barges cross from Red Hook. You can also get a taxi from the airport to take you to Red Hook for the people ferry to St John. Driving is on the LEFT, and roads are steep and winding—slow and steady wins here. There’s no Uber or Lyft, so plan on taxis or renting wheels. Take it easy and don’t get in a hurry and you will enjoy things much more. Creature Comforts & Realities Most homes collect rainwater in cisterns: please conserve water, always. Power outages happen: solar + battery or generators are common backups. Groceries are expensive: everything is shipped in, so make sure to budget accordingly.. Donkeys, goats, cows, and chickens roam freely so this is another reason to drive slowly—this is part of daily island life. Ocean Etiquette St. John’s reefs are fragile. Reef-safe sunscreen (zinc or titanium only) is required by law. Never stand on coral or touch marine life. Float, snorkel, and admire—without harm. History You Can Feel The island carries deep history: Taino petroglyphs, Danish colonial remnants, and the 1733 slave revolt—one of the earliest in the Caribbean. Explore ruins and trails to engage respectfully with the past. It is worth a visit to learn more at the National Park Tourist Center located in Cruz Bay by the National Park dock. Resilience & Hurricanes Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 devastated the island, but the community rebuilt trail by trail, dock by dock and are still building back even today. Locals remain resourceful and strong—visitors who show patience, respect, and care fit right in. The Vibe—Good, Bad, and Honest Good: world-class beaches, uncrowded trails, warm community, starry skies. Challenging: steep roads, tight parking, power or wifi outages can occur, grocery costs should be factored into your budget, slower pace (this is not necessarily a bad thing). :) Non-negotiables: greet kindly, conserve water and power, protect reefs, respect wildlife. St John is for those who appreciate nature, history and a genuine adventure. You'll come once and you'll come back again and again.

We loved our stay at Fishers Bay. It was exactly as described with everything needed for the beach. We had four people, so heads up for you couples, only three beach chairs but a beach blanket that saved the day the whole time. Close to Cruz bay, and had everything we needed.
We loved our stay at this property. It was accurately described in the listing and was very clean. There were five of us traveling together and everyone had space to spread out. I would stay here again.
Away from it all with a great view. Rental is a must and address a little hard to find. Kudos to some dude walking his dog who helped us out. Great owner and good communication. Look forward to going back. St John is the best.
Great communication from Sallie, the on-island caretaker for this nice, classic Fish Bay cottage. Good views, new air conditioners, and plenty of room for four.
Beautiful place with magnificent view. Great base camp for all our daily adventures. Comfortable beds and large indoor and outdoor areas to gather. Many extras for the beach. We loved it.
Fishers Perch is quiet with a wonderful view of the ocean and surrounding jungle. The way to the property takes you up steep, winding roads, which means it’s private and away from crowds.
The property has everything you need to have a wonderful vacation, and Sallie went above and beyond to communicate with us and answer all our questions- she’s a real gem! You’ll have a wonderful, relaxing time here!
Liked the fact that there were two separate apartments but could gather in the evening on the top deck and enjoy the views. My brother and his adult son stayed in one unit and my husband and I were in the other. The area was quiet and felt safe. It was easy to find with the directions given. I have been to St. John’s several times and the Fish Bay Area is my favorite area to stay.
It had most everything we needed. I has a great view, did the star gazing at night with the lights off. Would have liked an outdoor table to sit at to eat because we loved the view. We did sit at the chairs on the deck to eat anyway and used the outdoor coffee table. We did all of our cooking in the upstairs area. Cute place!
Stayed here for a week with my Girlfriend and Mom. It was nice having 2 completely separate area's both with kitchens bed shower and bathroom. My mom has double knee replacement so the lower one with only 3 stairs was perfect for her!
The views were amazing!
Lots of amenities! They had a lot of beach gear. I loved the taller camp style chair as I cannot get out of a beach chair!
The Stars were probably our favorite part!
The charcoal grill was also nice we had burgers one night they had plenty of charcoal and lighter fluid.
Would highly recommend if looking for a quite serene Villa with easy access.
We could feel the love that was put into this home. It had so much character. The views from the balcony were gorgeous, and the showers being partially outdoors was a new experience for us midwesterners! The water pressure would drop, but then the pump would kick in. The outdoor projector setup was tricky to set up, so we'd recommend step by step instructions. Some posted pictures may also need updating, like the hanging chairs and hammock. Only the kids could use the hammock since it was so low. Otherwise we appreciated the stocked kitchens and air conditioning! We also loved the bird feeders and the sweet bananaquits. We'll be back!
The property is clean with details and amenities to make it comfortable stay. We had a beautiful view and weren’t far from anything. A great experience and I would recommend this place to stay.

Quiet property, amazing views and a perfect getaway from the big city noise.
Very nice view. It was a little difficult driving back and forth from the beaches - the path is very windy with many sharp turns. The property is very outdated and needs some repairs. Power went out a few times so be prepared for that. Some of the closets were locked which looked really odd and other closets were dusty and full of old junk. Very small and old ac units inside the home. The windows are not sealed so expect many critters coming in. We were really excited to stay here but it was not at all what we expected especially for the price.
The two-level house worked out well for two couples, giving us plenty of private space with the ability to get together as a group. We shared the top deck for happy hour and sunsets, and cooked most meals downstairs with the nice stove/oven and large table for eating together. It is an older home that is still being renovated with some rustic features, but priced fairly for that reason. We appreciated the newer washer/dryer and AC in bedrooms as the house gets afternoon sun. The location is good with a quiet street and very private. We enjoyed our stay!
It was dirty, unsafe, and was misrepresented in the description of the property
When we arrived the first thing we noticed was the septic smell. It was overwhelming and never went away our.entire stay and aways got worse when we ran water- kitchen shower, flushed toilets and washing machine. Also, the air conditioners were old, inefficient and moldy and dirty, so were not usable. The outside stairs and decks were unsafe with loose and rotting board's, and the motion lights were not all working, which made them dangerous to use at night. The wooden lattice work in each shower was moldy, dirty with no shower curtain upstairs and a sharp metal drain. Due to the door's and windows having gaps and not closing properly, we were inundated with mosquitoes and no see- ums. The moldy outdoor canvas furniture was not usable and the inside couch and futon was not sufficient to sit on,since everytime we did we were covered with insert btes.
The downstairs fridge was rusty and dirty and we were not supplied with some fresh bottled water as advertised.
We contacted the property manager as the property letter said, and although she responded with acknowledgment, that was all we got.( not even a shower curtain for upstairs or lights that were out and needed bulbs or replacement, like the outside motion lights.
There were exposed wires hanging underneath the downstairs kitchen cabinet and from the porch ceiling and the fire extinguishers were under the kitchen sinks and one smoke detector was just laying on the table.
