Elwood Cabin was built at the beginning of the 1900’s. It was used by telephone lineman. The cabin was donated to the forest service in the 50’s. What an incredible place to spend the night in. The hike in from Elwood Pass is 3.5 miles in starting at 11,345ft topping out at about 12,500ft before dropping about 1000ft to the lake. More than a quarter million Troy ounces of gold was mined here between 1873-1959. Now an EPA superfund site due to the chemicals leaching into the surrounding area. Mining has been stopped but very cool to go up to Summitville at an altitude of about 11,500 ft and walk around the old wooden structures left by the inhabitants.
