The best area to stay in Shikāra is near the Kanha National Park gates, especially around Kisli and Mukki, as this offers the most convenient access to wildlife safaris.Kisli is a popular choice for its proximity to the park's main entrance, making it ideal for early morning game drives. This area is well-developed with a range of lodges and resorts, many of which are designed to blend with the natural surroundings. You'll find properties offering comfortable stays with amenities such as swimming pools and guided nature walks just outside the park boundary.Mukki, located on the southeastern side of the park, provides another excellent option for safari enthusiasts. It's often considered a slightly quieter alternative to Kisli, though still with good facilities and easy access to a different zone of the park. Lodges here often boast spacious grounds and offer a more secluded experience, superb for couples looking for a tranquil retreat after a day of wildlife viewing. Both Kisli and Mukki are excellent for travellers whose primary reason for visiting Shikāra is to experience the wildlife of Kanha National Park.

The best time to visit Shikāra is during the cooler, drier months, specifically from October to March, when the weather is most pleasant for exploring.During these months, the daytime temperatures are comfortable, typically ranging from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, and the evenings are cooler. This period avoids the intense heat of summer and the heavy monsoon rains, making it ideal for outdoor activities like wildlife safaris in the nearby national parks or exploring the historical sites. For travellers interested in wildlife, particularly tiger spotting, the drier conditions mean animals are more likely to gather around water sources, making them easier to observe. Many of the region's cultural festivals also take place during this time, offering a richer experience. While April and May are hot, they can also be good for wildlife viewing as animals are drawn to water. However, the high temperatures (often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius) can be challenging for some visitors.
