The views from the apartment allow you to observe a surviving section of a medieval fortification wall that has been restored in 80ties, St. Jacobs Church, small, but enlightened fragment of Saeima (Latvian Parlament), Dome Cathedral, depending on wich way you lookout. For centuries the space was used as an attic warehouse with built-in wooden lifting wheel for moving goods up and down. It has been refurbished in 90ties into a three-bedroom living space but has kept the rustic character of an original warehouse. Historically building belonged to a land property with 6 residential buildings constructed in the 14-19 century. Of which the 14th century stone building with our attic apartment is the only one that survived from the medieval Russian trade settlement. In 1537 when it re-appeared in Riga real estate book entries, it was marked as Ernst van Mengden's residential building. The location was perfect for exploring Riga’s Old Town and there were plenty of restaurants and cafes very very close by plus there is a small grocery store right around the corner and a bakery down the street. The location couldn’t have been more convenient. The apartment was one of the most unique places we have ever stayed and well worth the visit and had everything we needed including a washer/dryer.
