Arrived and were treated to a drink and told we were being upgraded from an on land bungalow to overwater.
This hotel is the original with the over water bungalow concept, so the units look dated and in need of some sprucing up.
Our stay was comfortable, you dive off your balcony into deep water, the view is out to one of the lagoon passes.
Staff is great and friendly. The location is great. The hotel however is very run down and in major need of an update.

Only one night but....
A nice overwater hotel. A quiet hotel with swimming and snorkeling right from your deck. Not a "new" hotel but comfortable. We were only there one night in preparation for our sailing charter but a nice place to "start" our Tahiti vacation.

Amazing Food and Friendly Service
Food at this hotel is outstanding. Some of the best food we had in our 14 day 4 islands visited in French Polynesia and better than the 4 & 5 star hotels we stayed at during this trip. The continental breakfast was much more than coffee and a croissant -- lots of fruit, yogurt, meat, cheese, etc.
If you are a foodie this is a great place to stay at. Also a place that the locals go to for lunch/dinner. This is not updated hotel. Basic, clean rooms. Bedding is clean. We observed that all rooms were cleaned daily even the ones not used the night before. Stayed 3 nights. Snorkeling right off of the dock was also fantastic.

No maintenance, too expensive
It is a pity that there is no maintenance and it is too near to the main street so the garden bungalows must be very noisy. For that what it offers it is too expensive.
These were the first over water bungalows built in French Polynesia and despite being a bit older than others, they are great. They do show some signs of age but that's part of their charm. We stayed at the fancier Sofitel in Bora Bora and we much preferred the Hawaiki Nui in terms of location, staff, views, amenities, and price.
Wonderful location and lots of fish in the water. The snorkeling right off the deck is good unless the water is choppy (sometimes it gets windy) but the water drops off substantially just past the bungalows so it's best closer in. It's a short trip to a private motu by boat and everything you might need is a 15 minute walk away in Uturoa (watch out for dogs along the way). Make sure to take the tour over to Taha'a that the hotel offers.
The hotel restaurant is also excellent. My wife and I are both vegetarian and they made special dishes for us. Prices were reasonable as well. The staff is nice, genuine, and very friendly.
We went to 7 different islands in FP and Raiatea was one of our favorites. Next time we visit, we will definitely be coming back to the Hawaiki Nui.
We stayed 2 nights prior to my captaining a Moorings catamaran for 10 days. The staff is very helpful except for one older waitress that seemed to be having a bad night and never even offered desert. The housekeeping staff showed up at 9:00 AM to clean our room and despite our "Do Not Disturb" sign and my yelling 3 times to go away they started to open the door with my wife and I naked in bed. I had to jump out of bed to bar the door. They never came back that day to clean or change the towels. Our room was next to the road so it was not quiet. The good part was the food was very good, the property is in a great location, the air conditioning worked, and the thatched hut bungalows and grounds right on the water are very appealing and the place is clean. Try to avoid a bungalow by the roadside. This is the best place to stay on Raitea. Just make a reservation and stop worrying. PS- be careful ordering a martini. If they ask you "Red or White" they may give you straight "Martini & Rossi" vermouth. Yeech!

Pre-sail Stay
Stayed in this hotel prior to picking up our charter boat on Rai'atea. It was clean and nice but a little outdated. The location was perfect and the staff was very nice. Two semi-big negatives...We had a dinner that had some "not so good" items but the manager took them off our bill. We unknowingly asked the hotel to arrange our airport transfer via email as we were nit sure what to expect which ended up costing 3 times the normal rate as the hotel took a large cut off the top. Would book again but would eat elsewhere and make our own travel arrangements.
Staff was exceptionally friendly and informative. Food was very good, rooms air conditioned for we wimpy Americans. There was a lively and authentic show on Friday night which was great fun. Would certainly stay again if we went back to the Islands.
This hotel is in a very nice location on the water. The staff was fantastic and very friendly - we were greeted with a fruit drink and leis when we arrived; check in was quick and our bags delivered to our over-water bungalow before we walked through the gardens to get to the bungalow. The property is one of the oldest over-water bungalow hotels in the islands but it has aged well. The bed was comfortable and the room was very clean. We did not use the marina, sports center or the swimming pool but the snorkeling around the bungalows was great; you jump right into the ocean from your deck. Beach towels were provided in each room, and there was a table and chairs for morning coffee or afternoon cocktails, and two lounge chairs for catching some sun. We ate at the hotel for all meals; breakfast buffet wasn't all that great but the dinners were al la carte and everything we ate was very good. The free Polynesian show on Friday nights can't be missed - a five star experience! Overall rating for the hotel is excellent but don't expect fancy. It's a small resort that has been carefully cared for over the years. Pick it for the friendly staff and cleanliness and you won't be disappointed. We would definitely stay at Hawaiki Nui Hotel should we visit Raiatea again.
Although not cheap, it is probably one of the cheapest overwater bungalows you'll find in French Polynesia. It does require some maintenance such as the glass floor in the room should be replace with a cleaner one and the deck boards can use a replacing, but still I enjoyed my stay there and would go back. I read reviews where people complained about the noise, and although it is loud, its the ocean waves crashing into the wall and for me, I enjoyed it and found it relaxing. I like being able to jump off the balcony into the ocean and the snorkeling was amazing. The staff was extremely friendly and enjoyed talking stories. The free Polynesian show was awesome and the dancers were Gorgeous. The town was about a 10-15 minute walk, so a car wasn't even needed. I just rented a scooter for 4 hours to circle the island. I recommend this hotel if you're in Raiatea!
its trying to be the "place to be" for locals on a wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday night. it meant loud thumping music in the bar which is easily audible from all rooms until midnight. Not at all what we were looking for in a honeymoon location. Can't recommend this hotel to anyone if they are going to continue with the bands/DJs 3/4 times a week, unless of course you're there as a single person, but then you wouldn't choose Polynesia as a holiday destination in the first place
