Beds were comfortable (two twin beds), as were the pillows. Washroom was on the smaller size. Staff were absolutely amazing at this hotel. The view of the town and river from the room was perfect. In room amenities were also nice, the self brew coffee was pretty good. We really enjoyed our time at the Onomichi Club and would stay there again. It is a little hard to get to by foot. Especially from the train station, if you have luggage, pay the extra money for a taxi to take you up to the hotel. Think it had only just re-opened post a change of ownership and total refurbishment so was spotless. Rooms were very large for Japan with amazing views across the harbour to the sea. Lots of very helpful staff. Lovely rooftop bar (they gave us a voucher for a free drink when we checked in!) and breakfast was very tasty although traditional Japanese i.e. rice, miso, vegetables and rice. The taxi ride from Onomichi JR station costs about JPY1,300 each way, so if you want to go down to the streets to explore and eat you will have to pay about JPY2,600 for the round trip. What really shocked me was the hotel breakfast. It costs JPY2,200 and at that price you would expect to be full but there was tiny amount of food (one thumbnail size bit of fish, one tiny piece of omelette, and very small varieties of condiments plus a bowl of rice and miso soup. I had visited an upscale onsen in Uno (by Naoshima island) and the sumptuous lunch set there cost JPY2,100 with so much delicious seasonal food, making me feel deprived by the breakfast set at the Onomichi Club. Again, the staff was very nice but this hotel has poor value for the money. Quite unbelievable that they don't provide a shuttle service as every other hotel in Japan in a similar location does. The room was the most uncomfortable one of my entire stay in Japan. The person who designed the fancy bench certainly did not sit on it. In the tiny bathroom it smelled badly the drains, especially when taking a shower. Windows have no mosquito protection. Housekeeping to be improved as well. I stayed two nights and although I got new towels and water, they did not change the cups and glasses. Sound insulation is not very good, you can hear well your room neighbours. Reception is kind of friendly, but compared to Japanese standards really on the lower end. Communication through the booking portal and their website did not work.
