"Relaxing family stay with fluffy snow falling outside. Clean rooms, nice beds, pleasant indoor and outdoor onsen, breakfast was very good. We played ping pong, but unfortunately the fireplace was never lit. We enjoyed walking around in the snow, and the nearby soba restaurant was so good we ate there twice. The nearby shrine is worth a visit, and the train station is only a short walk for those without a car. I would like to visit again!"

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Onikobe Onsen?
The best areas to stay in Onikobe Onsen are around the main Onikobe Onsen village and the nearby Naruko Onsen area.

The Onikobe Onsen village itself is a compact area located in a picturesque valley. It's known for its natural hot springs, with many traditional ryokan (Japanese inns) offering direct access to these therapeutic waters. The main street, though not long, features a few local eateries and souvenir shops. This area is particularly well-suited for couples seeking a relaxing getaway, as the focus is on the tranquil hot spring experience and the natural beauty of the surroundings. Many ryokan here offer private onsen baths, superb for a romantic soak.

For families, the Naruko Onsen area, just a short drive from Onikobe, offers a bit more variety. While also famous for its onsen, Naruko has a more developed town centre with a wider selection of shops and restaurants. Families might appreciate the Naruko Gorge, which is popular for hiking, and the Kokeshi Doll Museum, where children can learn about and even try painting these traditional wooden dolls.
When is the best time to go to Onikobe Onsen?
The best time to visit Onikobe Onsen is typically during the spring (late April to early June) and autumn (October to early November) for pleasant weather and stunning natural scenery.

Spring brings mild temperatures, superb for exploring the surrounding national parks and enjoying the fresh mountain air. You'll see the landscape come alive with new growth, and it's a lovely time for gentle walks and outdoor activities before the summer heat.

Autumn is particularly popular due to the vibrant autumn leaves. The forests around Onikobe Onsen transform into a tapestry of red, orange, and gold, offering spectacular views, especially around the Naruko Gorge. This season is ideal for those who appreciate scenic drives, photography, and relaxing in the outdoor hot springs while surrounded by nature's display.

While summer (July to August) can be warm, it's also a good time for hiking and enjoying the lush greenery.
