About this property

Casa Sweetie is your place to live, work or visit in the very heart of Jalatlaco.

  • Mexico is considered the heart of the Americas...
Oaxaca is considered by far the heart of Mexico...
Jalatlaco is considered by most to be the heart of Oaxaca...

And Casa Sweetie is your place to live, work, or visit right in the heart of Jalatlaco.

We are located in the very heart of the Jalatlaco neighborhood, literally a few steps away from the San Matías Church, historically considered the geographical and cultural center of the neighborhood.

Our entrance hallway features its own private mural, depicting the complex relationship between Oaxaca’s proud heritage and its recent popularity as a tourist destination. Its title is “8 Deer Dilemma,” and it is one of only three “real” murals in the city that tell a story, using the ancient Mixtec language structure to convey an idea rooted in duality.

This private mural is only open to visitors on special occasions when the house is not booked.

The first floor of the house features a dining room with a table that seats up to six, a spacious, fully equipped kitchen, a bathroom, a large living room, and a studio that can be converted into an extra bedroom, as well as a central patio and a backyard.

Upstairs, there is an additional workspace (Wi-Fi included), three bedrooms, and two more bathrooms.

Water availability is a major concern in modern Oaxaca, so Casa Sweetie is the only house in town that combines a rainwater collection and filtration system with a 21,000-liter (approx. 5,500-gallon) storage capacity to ensure enough water for your stay in an eco-friendly way.

Our prime location allows you to explore most of Oaxaca City’s top attractions on foot. Among other destinations, we’re less than a 10-minute walk from El Llano City Park, Santo Domingo Church, the ADO First Class Bus Station, El Zócalo, the 20 de Noviembre Market, the City Cathedral, and the local Guerreros Baseball Stadium.

At the stadium, you can hire a “taxi foráneo” to explore nearby towns such as El Tule, Mitla, Tlacolula, or Matatlán. These taxis offer cheaper fares compared to private vans or hotel taxis, and locals use them often.

The local cuisine is a must-try in Jalatlaco, and we’re literally surrounded by it. Right outside our entrance is the Ko.fee café, where you can enjoy a delicious cup of coffee anytime; and next door is the renowned Xiguelas restaurant, which also features a shop selling locally sourced organic food.

We’re also just a block away from other well-known Jalatlaco restaurants and cafes, such as Santa Hierba, Bacanora, Agora, and Blasón.

Mural paintings are a key element of Mexico’s, Oaxaca’s, and Jalatlaco’s identity, and Casa Sweetie fully embraces this tradition.

Our main entrance opens directly onto the famous mural of La Catrina, known as “La abuelita de Coco” (Coco’s Grandma) by the locals.

The facade is decorated with the mural of “Los Perritos” (The Little Dogs), which depicts a significant pre-Hispanic clay sculpture.

And right on the corner of the street are the “Kissing Skeletons,” a beautiful scene that marks the main entrance to the first and only Barrio Mágico in Mexico.
