About this property

Imakusa-so, Nara, Naramachi - The Steam Bath House -

  • The origins of the Japanese bath date back to the Nara period (6th century). With the introduction of Buddhism, the culture of steam baths was brought over from China, and Empress Kōmyō, the consort of Emperor Shōmu, had a bathing facility called “karafuro” built at Hokke-ji Temple. At that time, bathing involved warming the body with steam to induce sweating and purify the body—a practice similar to what we now call a sauna.

In homage to the history of the Nara period, we have installed a Japanese-style sauna featuring low sliding doors that evoke the atmosphere of that era. Furthermore, with the hope that families and groups of friends will experience the history of Nara, we have ensured ample space in the living room and bedrooms. Each guest room features a semi-open-air bath, and we provide all necessary amenities—including beverages centred around the local sake “Harushika”—included in the room rate. We hope you’ll fully savour the charm of the region while experiencing a sense of “renewal” in this luxurious space.
