8/10 Good
"The cabin was mostly as expected: nice, secluded, with all the necessary amenities, clean and safe. Fireplace and sauna are awesome. Plus the starry skies or the Auroras on every clear night. During the stay the owners responded to emails within a few hours or less. That being said, some details in the description seem outdated. It claimed no neighbors within 1 km, but there are definitely people living about 600 meters away, there are (apparently empty) houses about 400 meters away, and there is a new villa for rent just 50 meters away from the cottage (it wasn't occupied during my stay, but people drove by to and from it several times). Lake Jerisjarvi is indeed 300 m away, but good luck getting to it - it's all private land or bogs (or both). The surrounding forest is full of bogs too. The cottage is not as roomy as it might seem. I was alone and still sometimes felt a bit out of space to put my stuff in. For 5 people (maximum occupancy) it may be a bit too cramped. And there is no good place for computer work. Also, there were some maintenance issues. Wi-fi was slow and unstable, sometimes disappearing completely. Twice I asked the owner to reboot the router and it helped for a bit. Eventually I gave up and switched to my mobile Internet. The toilet kept getting stuck after a flush and wouldn't refill without a kick. Water kept getting too cold or too hot even if you didn't touch the valves. And on the checkout day the power went out. Despite all that I had a good time."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Muonionalusta?
The best area to stay in Muonionalusta is within the village itself, or in the immediate surrounding area, as this offers the most convenient access to local activities and amenities.Muonionalusta is a very small, remote village in Swedish Lapland. It's not organised into distinct neighbourhoods or districts like a city. Instead, accommodation options tend to be individual lodges, guesthouses, or cabins spread out within a short distance of the village centre. The village itself is small, with a few local services. For travellers seeking a unique and tranquil experience, staying in a lodge just outside the main village is ideal. These accommodations often provide direct access to the natural surroundings, superb for activities like Northern Lights viewing, dog sledding, or snowmobiling. They often offer full-board options, which is convenient given the remote location.Couples looking for a romantic getaway will appreciate the secluded nature of the lodges. Many offer private cabins with features like outdoor hot tubs or saunas, allowing for a very private and comfortable stay under the Arctic sky.
When is the best time to go to Muonionalusta?
The best time to go to Muonionalusta for Northern Lights viewing is between late September and late March, while for summer activities, July and August are ideal. For those drawn by the allure of the Northern Lights, the extended dark hours of the Arctic winter provide the best viewing opportunities. During this period, especially from October to February, the skies are darkest, increasing the visibility of the aurora borealis. Temperatures can be very cold, often dropping well below freezing, so warm clothing is essential. This season is superb for travellers who prioritise unique natural phenomena and don't mind the cold.If you prefer milder weather and daylight activities, the summer months of July and August are excellent. The "midnight sun" means nearly 24 hours of daylight, which is superb for exploring the natural landscape, fishing, or hiking. This period is ideal for those who want to experience the Arctic's natural beauty without the extreme cold and enjoy longer days for outdoor pursuits.
