I took an hour out to wander the town this afternoon and explored a few places that I would usually pass if there wasn't any snow. Morzine is a border mountain resort known for its outdoor opportunities and classical chalet-style architecture. Bisected by a river gorge and surrounded by mountain peaks, this idyllic town is located in the expansive Portes du Soleil mountain area. Morzine is a well-established resort that has been attracting skiers to its slopes for more than 80 years. It is also a popular summer destination, particularly with cyclists who come here to ride Tour de France stages in the nearby mountains. During winter, test Morzine’s 81 downhill runs, which range from sheltered nursery slopes to black runs, or tackle the 60 miles (96 kilometres) of cross-country trails. Purchase a lift pass for the wider cross-border Portes du Soleil ski area to gain access to more than 404 miles (650 kilometres) of marked ski runs. In summer, the town makes a great base for exploring the surrounding region. Use the ski lifts to access hiking and mountain biking trails, including the famous cross-country biking circuit, the Grand Tour des Portes du Soleil. Take the Super Morzine Bubble lift for panoramic views of the surrounding mountain peaks. Breathe in fresh mountain air on horse-riding excursions or go rafting, canoeing or canyoneering along the River Dranse. For more relaxing pursuits, sunbathe, swim or fish at the peaceful Lake Montriond. Make use of the excellent facilities at Morzine’s Parc des Dérêches swimming complex. Dive into an Olympic-size swimming pool, glide around indoor and outdoor skating rinks or relax in the spa area. Sample local Savoyard mountain cuisine, such as fondue or the hearty tartiflette, a layered dish made of potatoes, cheese, bacon and onions. Geneva Airport just over an hour’s drive from Morzine. There is no train station in Morzine, but nearby stations in Cluses and Thonon-les-Bains are connected to Morzine by bus routes.
