Visit Ightham Mote to enjoy one of Britain’s most important historic houses in a gorgeous country setting. Trace the lives of each family that has lived in the house, enjoy a variety of period artworks and take a stroll around the estate. Since its construction in the 14th century, the manor has retained much of its medieval country house exterior. Enjoy the mysterious atmosphere of the stone structure and its moat, which are often framed by rising fog. Take an enlightening guided tour to learn some of the many stories of the house’s journey through time. Each room seems to offer a relic of the families that lived there, from the extravagantly decorated fireplace built by the Selby family in the 17th century, to the more modern comforts of central heating and bathrooms installed by Sir Thomas Coyler Ferguson in 1895\. Highlights in the house include an impressive Tudor-era painted ceiling and a crypt. After seeing the house, stroll though the picturesque courtyard and spend a peaceful moment in the gardens. Bring the kids here to the discovery den to keep them occupied with fun activities, quizzes and paths. Turn your visit into a day trip and take a walk around the wider estate to enjoy the Kent countryside. Choose from one of three trails, each of which offer their own unique view of the picturesque house and its landscape. You can enjoy these walks in all seasons: In spring the flowers start to blossom, in summer the sun reflects on the moat, in autumn the trees change color and in winter the fog gives the landscape a mystical look. Ingtham Mote is open year-round, but times vary by the month check the National Trust website for detailed information. There is an entrance fee, which is reduced in winter. The house is an hour’s drive west of Canterbury, just north of Tonsbridge, and there is ample parking space. Walking distance to a small town centre with lots of food options, and literally next door to a petrol station if you just wanted a snack. Would definitely stay again.
