After miracles of healing were being performed at a nearby well in the 13th century, the nearby church of St Mary's was placed under the protection of James I who built hostels for the growing number of pilgrims. James IV regularly made the journey to Whitekirk, but his son James V gave the site to the Sinclair family who in around 1540 built a rare example in Scotland of a 3-storey tithe barn with stone from the former pilgrims' hostel. The diner was very good. Staff at the restaurant is very helpful Breakfast is a bit disappointing considering the standing of the establishment. Nothing bad but not fantastic. Also when we had supper, there is no price on the menu except for drinks. That was a bit disturbing. Finally, we arrived a bit early as we flew in from Canada. We were very tired but the room got ready only at 2:30pm, which is exactly the time when it is supposed to be ready. I cannot fault the establishment but I would have appreciated some gesture to expedite the readiness of the room. The room is very quiet, there is a nice old library and rhe garden is simply magnificent. All in all, it was a very good stay and a beautiful scenery. But I think a bit overpriced for what we got.
