I’m afraid the Guv’nor was a bit of a disappointment. It was a great price, compared to posher downtown hotels but I likely wouldn’t stay there again. The room was adequate but had a musty smell we were never able to clear. Disappointingly, we stayed for three nights and the room was never made up during that time. This would have been less disappointing if they had informed us at check-in. Further, if they didn’t plan to make the room up during our stay, they should have supplied us with more towels and toiletries. The pub connected to the hotel is fine and especially noteworthy for its warm, hospitable service. But beware — “breakfast included” doesn’t include your whole breakfast. Rather, you get a voucher you can apply towards your breakfast that doesn’t actually cover the cost of most of the breakfasts on the menu. They were out of Guinness during our stay, which is disappointing for a pub. But the fish cakes and toutons were both very good.
