Visit Discovery Point at Dundee’s city waterfront to experience the triumphs and troubles of the captain and crew aboard the Royal Research Ship Discovery, an Antarctic exploration ship first launched in 1901\. After a long span of usage exploring the polar oceans, the RRS Discovery is now the centerpiece of the fascinating Discovery Point museum.

Check out the magnificent three-masted wooden ship docked in a special mooring at Discovery Point, near where it was built. The museum experience begins within the large octagonal museum building on the quayside. Explore the exhibits and uncover the story of Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton on the British National Antarctic Expedition, which was completed in 1904\. This voyage, known as the Discovery Expedition, brought groundbreaking research in Antarctic biology, zoology, meteorology, geology and magnetism back to England.

Trace the journey of the Antarctic explorers through interactive displays. Computer-based multimedia exhibits explain the science brought home by Captain Scott and Shackleton and describe conditions they endured. Watch the audiovisual shows and learn the amazing stories of these revered adventurers.

At the dock, walk along the gangway and onto the main deck of the historic RRS Discovery. The ship has been meticulously restored to its original state. Marvel at the ship’s construction and its intricate rigging system. Descend into the lower decks to find out how the explorers lived during their voyage.

See real artifacts from the time, including Captain Scott’s rifle and pipe. Learn about the games the shipmates played to pass the time or inspect some of their scientific findings, including varieties of sea fauna. View photographs and films that detail the RRS Discovery’s subsequent journeys in the 1920s and 1930s.

Discovery Point and the RRS Discovery are located on the quay of the River Tay. Admission costs include access to the ship. Discounts are available for children and families. Pick up discounted combination tickets for the Verdant Works museum and Glamis Castle for a fascinating insight into Dundee’s history. Dundee’s main train station is adjacent to the museum and the city center is a few minutes’ walk away.

Had a great stay in Dundee. We were upgraded to a large room on the corner of the top floor, overlooking the Tay. The bar was cheerful, the pool and sauna were a welcome luxury, and the whole place had a pleasant buzz about it.

Check in staff excellent. Disappointed that despite notice saying food all day no food available in bad at 8.30pm. Clients internet did not work . When the password to join was entered it immediately told me that the system could not be found. Ok for a one night stay but not if you are staying longer
