Built in 1351, it served as the temple of the royal family and no monks lived there as it was used exclusively for royal ceremonies. The most prominent structures on the site are the three Chedis which were destroyed along with the rest of the temple when the Burmese invaded in 1767. Restoration work begun in 1956, however only the three Chedis were restored. Without a doubt being built for a King, nothing was spared when it came to the beauty of this temple complex. In 1448 King Borommatrailokanat built a new palace to the north and the old palace grounds was converted into a holy site. Three Chedis were built in 1492 by the order of his son King Ramathibodi II with two of them used to house his ashes and the ashes of his brother, King Borommaracha III. It’s nice to be a King!
