Immerse yourself in the history and majestic architecture of one of the region’s most remarkable châteaus in Valençay. Find exhibits of rare artifacts and astonishing creations or relax for hours beside a tranquil woodland river.
Just a 5-minute walk west from the town centre is Château de Valençay and its pristine gardens. Wander along pebble paths lined with lime and yew trees and gaze up toward the vast fortified towers that stand at either end of the 16th-century castle. Admire exquisite embroidered furniture and Chinese vases in the main building before you head to the more recent west wing. The motor museum here has more than 60 cars spanning a period of over 100 years while a separate display is devoted to Prince de Talleyrand, one of the château’s most famous residents.
Talleyrand was an important figure in Valençay during the 1820s and 1830s. Many of the buildings that stand today, including the town hall and alms house,were constructed under his leadership. Take a short stroll to view these sights. Stop in at the deli to sample the town’s delicious goat cheese.
After your meal, visit Jacky Chichery’s amazing Museum of Art with Sugar on Rue du Château. The skilled artisans here create intricate sculptures from sugar including a watermill and an astonishingly detailed representation of the nearby château.
The pastries and chocolates here are also delicious. Purchase some for dessert for a delightful afternoon picnic beside the small River Nahon south of the village. Watch the local people fish in the clear water as you sit in the shade of rustling trees.
